Leadershiphasbeendefinedasaprocessofsocialinfluence,which
maximizestheeffortsofothers,towardstheachievementofagoal.The
wholeIntrovertsvs.extrovertsinleadershipargumenthasbeenarecurring
debateforcenturiesnow.Those with authority on the matter are torn on
determining the better leaderAlmosteverypersonintheWorldhasbeen
askedorwillbeaskedthatbigquestion,areyouandintrovertoran
extrovert?atsomepointintheirlife.Istruggledtofindagenretomakemy
productoffofbecauseintroversionandextroversionarebothsuchbroad
termsthatencompassawholesociety.Ifinallydecidedtocreatesomething
thatshowedhowintrovertsandextrovertsaredifferentintheirdifferintheir
leadershipskills,soIcreatedahumorousmusicvideotocontrastthetwo.
RSomeresearchfromStanfordprofessorScottWiltermuthaswellas
othersourcessaythatintrovertsprovetobebetterleadersasawholedueto
theirabilitytorationalizeandreflect,whileotherresearchrebukesthose

claimsandsaysthatextrovertsarebetterleadersbecausetheycaninspire
andmotivatetheirfollowerstowardsagoal,butIhavecometoamore
specificconclusion.ThroughintensiveresearchandcarefulreasoningIhave
cometotheconclusionthatthereisnodefinitivewinnerbetweenthetwo;
instead,,butintrovertsingeneralhaveshowntoworktogetherbetterthan
extroverts.
Asextraversionandintroversionespecially,arebecomingmore
understoodbytodayssociety,peopledontjustseeintrovertsas
bookwormsbuttheyactuallyseethemasleaderslikeAbrahamLincolnand
BillGates.AsIbeganstartedtowritemyrapIwantedtomakeithumorous
andentertaining,soIdidntwantittobetoomuchinformationcrammed
intoonelittlerap.IkeptthatinmindasIwroteit.Youcantell
Ikeptdiggingdeeperintointrovertsandwhyintrovertsoftenmake
betterleadersthanextroverts.AccordingtoRanineSwaid,awriterand
psychologistforpsych2go,bothlowextroversionandhighconsciousness
arewhatcompaniesandorganizationslookfortodayintheirleading
employees.Iwantedtoincorporatethisintomyvideoaswell,soIdecided
tousedifferentlyricstoconveythecontrastsanddestroythestereotypesthat
oursocietyhasmadeforintrovertsaswellasextroverts.Inotonlydisplayed

thesecontrastsinmylyrics,butIalsoshowedtheminthemusicvideo.I
wantedtocreateawaytoshowthestereotypethatthereareIntrovertsand
extrovertsandnotreallyanythinginbetween.Iconveyedthisbystartingthe
musicvideooffwithseveralblackandwhitescenestoshowthatinthepast
therehasbeenalmostadefactosegregationofextrovertsandintrovertsand
whattheyaresupposedtodoandviseversa.Ifinishedthevideoinbright
colorsmostlytoshowthediversityofpeopleandhowdiversityinateam
settingisveryhelpful.
Inrecentyearscompaniesandbusinesseshavebeenlookingmoreinto
introvertsvs.extrovertstofindoutwhoisabetterfitfortheirleadership
positions.Companiesandbusinesseswanttoseeleaderswhocanleadwell,
butmoreimportantly,theywantleadersthatcanworkwelltogether.Thisis
theveryreasonthatcorporationsandbusinessessendemployeestodoteam
buildingcourseslikehighropescourses,sportsteamsoranysortofteam
buildingexercise.Teamworkisasignificantpartofmanyworkfieldsand
thepointthatIwantedtoemphasizeinmyvideoandrapisthatyoucanlead
ifyouareanintrovertandyoucanbringdifferentskillsthatyourteammates
donthavebybeingintrovertedandtheywillbringskillsthatyoudonthave
aswell.

Ahugereasonthattheworkforceispushingforlowextroversionin
theiremployeesisbecauseofthedominancecomplementaritytheory
(swaid).AccordingtoarelativelyrecentstudyatStanfordUniversitythe
dominancecomplementaritytheoryisthetendencyforpeopletorespond
oppositelytoothersalongthecontroldimensionofinterpersonalbehavior.
Inotherwords,agroupwithdifferentleaderswantingtododifferentthings
islesslikelytosucceedthanagroupofpeoplewhoareokaywithsacrificing
somecontroltoaccomplishsomethingasagroup.Irepeatedthelineweall
cantbeprominentaccordingtothetheoryaboutdominancetwiceinmy
rapbecauseitissotrue.AsIresearchedandcontinuedtodigdeeperI
discoveredalotaboutthepowercomplexthatextrovertsfaceinteamsor
groups.Asasocietywebreedtomanyextrovertsbyteachingthemthattobe
aleaderyouhavetobeanallaroundextrovert,butthatishighlyfalse
(Martinuzzi).Wehavetoworktogethersomuchintodayssocietyandwe
cantfunctionasaunitifwearealltryingtobethepersonincharge.

InmyrapIemphasizedtheacknowledgmentandriseofintroversionin

timeisnowandAneweraiscomingandtheintroverthasrisen).
TherearemanythingsthatseparateextrovertsandintrovertsandI
havemadethatclearinmypaperandinmyproduct.Ileanedmoretowards
theintrovertsidebecauseofmyownpersonalbias,butIwantedtomake
surethatIconveyedthedifferentpositiveandnegativesofeach.Introverts
aresometimethestereotypicalversionthatwethinkofthatarebookworms
likeIshowedintheopeningofmyvideo.Ijustwantedtogetthepoint
acrossthatthereisnocleardefinitiveversionofanintrovertoranextrovert.
Theyarebothsuchbroadtermsthathavemanydifferentaspects,yetsociety
forcesustotakeasideofwhetheryouareintrovertedorextrovertedanditis
notthatsimple.Thereisnoblackandwhiteanswerforeveryone,butitis
importantthatweseebothsidesandweareabletodiversifyourworkplaces
andourleadershippositionswithalltypesofpeople.
Iwentinwiththeintentionsofthisbeingasimpleintrovertsvs.
extrovertsbattleandthatiswhyIkeptthenameintrovertsvs.extroverts
theme,butthatisnothowthisdebateisatall.Ikeptthebattlelikename
becauseitshowsthestereotypethatyourextroversionorintroversion
defineswhoyouare,whetheryouareawinneroraloser,aleaderora

follower,etc.butthatisnthowitworks.Thereissomuchmoretothetopic.
Introvertsareresilient,reflective,nonimpulsivepeoplewhointernalize
thingsandthatmakesforagreatleaderinalotofcases,butthereisa
multitudeofothertraitsofanintroverttoo.Extrovertsareacategoryof
peoplewhoareoutspoken,quickmindedandinspirational,buttheyarealso
somuchmore.Everypersonisdifferentintheirextroversion/introversion,
butitisimportantthatweembracebothofthesekindsofpeoplein
leadershipandworktogethertocreatebusinesses,organizationsand
companiesthathavestrongleadersofbothintrovertsandextroverts.Ithink
thatmyvideohelpstoconveythepointsIhavemadeinthispaper.Iuse
humor,angles,colorandmoretohelpvisualizetheleadershipskillsofboth
introvertsandextroverts.
