Letter of Transmittal

Dear Professor Stephenson,

The purpose of this letter is to address what I have completed and gained through the English
1010 course. Through this class I have completed three final pieces of work: a Literacy
Narrative, a Rhetorical Analysis, and a Research Project. I will explain each individual piece to
better illustrate my growth through each process.
Literacy Narrative
This paper was the most difficult for me to write in terms of composition; because it was such a
personal story, I tried to perfect it on the first draft and didnt respect the process. I wrote this
memoir about my infant son being diagnosed with albinism. My intended audience was my
professor, peers, parents with children with or without a disability, as well as myself. I wanted to
bring a sense of suspense and heavy emotion to show how the experience had felt to me.
At first, I had problems with verb tense, giant paragraphs, and transitioning. I failed to give my
audience a definition of albinism, which was needed to give a clearer understanding of the story.
Having seen these shortcomings through lab and feedback from my professor, I learned that
revision is unavoidable and necessary. During the process of revising, I realized the importance
of writing to my audience by giving them sensory details, which helps them experience the
journey along with me. I learned that perfection happens through the process of composing,
getting feedback, revising and editing, not in just one of its parts.
Rhetorical Analysis
Honestly, I enjoyed this paper the most. I have always loved a good mystery, and thats how I
approached this paper. This paper taught me about the different tools writers use to persuade
their audience. The article I chose to write about was, When Prisoners Protest by Wilbert
Rideau. My audience was my professor, peers, concerned citizens, prison authorities and
lawmakers. I intended to show my audience how Rideau was only somewhat successful at using
rhetoric.
After I got feedback, I realized that I summarized throughout my first draft, making it difficult to
focus on a specific argument. When I revised I changed my thesis, making the organization flow
nicely, and making my overall analysis stronger. I feel through this paper my confidence grew
the most as a writer.
Research Project
The research process for this project was time consuming but surprisingly I didnt mind. My
research topic was Labeling GMOs. The intended audience was, my professor, peers, and

general public. I found a wealth of information, making it overwhelming at times because each
article had a different angle. This is where the annotated bibliography was most helpful; it helped
keep my thoughts straight as well as organize what sources I wanted to use in my summary.
My first draft lacked multiple viewpoints, so I added the benefits of GMOs to credit all sides of
the debate. Overall, this paper needed the least amount of revisions. Through this process I was
able to apply my knowledge from the previous lesson about analyzing, which is key when you
are researching.
Where I Am Today
Writing for me is a process. In the beginning, it proved to be a daunting task. It involved having
moments of intense frustration, not knowing where to begin and spending literally hours at the
computer with little to show for my time. However, as I progressed through this class, working
through each assignment, I found myself gaining more confidence and understanding of what a
writer is. Writing is not only having words down on paper but it is the process of thought behind
the words.
