Monthly Embellishment & Training for
the Sorors of New Jersey
Building on the Principles of Zeta
While Blazing New Paths!
May 2016
Part 1
During the March 29 webinar, we learned that the minutes from our meetings are a source of authority, as they
reflect the official actions taken by the body. It is important to elect a Recording Secretary that is organized,
hard-working, intelligent and an excellent writer. The secretary is arguably the most important officer as she is
responsible for organizing, assimilating and disseminating information within the organization and is the highest ranking officer after the President and Vice President(s).

AMENDING A MOTION
This months submission for embellishment addresses the steps to amending a motion.
Below are examples to assist you with the process.
During debate, one may move to amend the pending motion. Remember that there are 3
basic processes of amendments.
Let's amend this sample motion: "I move that we buy a new sign."
You can move to amend by Inserting words or paragraphs.
I move to amend by Inserting the phrase "not to exceed $50 dollars" at the end of the motion.
You can move to amend by Striking out (not deleting) words or paragraphs.
amend by Substituting (Striking out and Inserting) entire paragraphs or the complete motion.
I move to amend by Striking out the word sign and Inserting the word billboard.
You can also amend the amendment, before it is voted upon: But you can only amend the
Inserted or Struck out words. You cannot amend a separate part of the main motion not covered by the amendment that is currently being discussed!
The difficult part is remembering that the more urgent motions cannot be amended: Adjourn, Question of
Privilege, Orders of the Day, Lay on/Take from the Table, Previous Question, Point of Order, Appeal, Parliamentary Inquiry, Suspend the Rules, and Reconsider.

Greeting Sorors,
We are excited for the 2016 March for Babies campaign. Each year, our New Jersey Blue and White answers

For 2016, we will continue to show up for the challenge. Our Sorority goal is $460,000 and New Jerseys
fundraising efforts for each chapter family (Graduate, Undergraduate, Amicae and Youth Auxiliaries) is to
raise $1,000.00 and to continue to promote the maternal health initiative.
The 2016 March for Babies Toolkit which serves as a guide for chapters is enclosed in this communication.

donors and walkers. Enclosed is the official social media graphic and hashtag #zphibmb42016.
Please share the M4B information with your chapter's March for Babies

On March 19th, 2016, the brothers of the Eastern Region of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. came together for the Eastern Region Candidates Forum. The forum

On March 31st, 2016, the Psi Pi Chapter hosted The Royal Revue
at Seton Hall University which aimed to raise money for the March
of Dimes March for Babies. At this event, there were a number of
performances from
students attending
Seton Hall University and from various schools in the
North Jersey area
including spoken
word, singing, and dancing. Numerous Greek and non-Greek
vendors were present and guests enjoyed a catered dinner
and raffled items that were donated from local South Orange
businesses. The special guest performer, Miles Hodges, who
is a poet from The Strivers Row, performed three spoken
word pieces and gave special commendations about how much he admires the brotherhood and sisterhood of
black Greek-lettered organizations on college campuses. He acknowledged the importance of our organizations, especially considering the social injustices that are occurring within our communities. The night was
filled with fun and inspiration and through this event Psi Pi was able to raise over $500 to be donated to the
March of Dimes.
