Pre-Unit Assessment
Unpack Unit 4 EA 1 pg. 293 SB
Poetry Corner - watched Text Me from Brave New Voices
Notes: Many students zoned out during the presentation of the Classroom Procedures and
policies. For the next class period, I should modify the presentation so that students have small
tasks to do while I explain the hand-out. This will better engage students.
Class as a whole enjoyed the BioPoem. Students are receptive to the idea of poetry. Several
students mentioned that they studied metaphor and simile in middle school.

Period 3

Pre-Unit Assessment
Unpack Unit 4 EA 1 pg. 293 SB

Notes: The modification to the Classroom Procedures and Policies presentation worked well. I
had students highlight and underline certain parts of the procedures. It emphasized certain
points as well as kept students focused.
Class also enjoyed the BioPoem. Student 1, 8, 11, 12, and 19 expressed an interest in poetry
and completed their BioPoems at a much faster rate than the other students. They already have
a clear understanding of poetic devices.Students 1 and 12 seemed a little bored toward the end
of the lesson because they had finished their poems and had nothing else to do because the
majority of the class had not finished. In the future, I should have an extra activity or prompt
prepared for them so that they can still be supported and challenged during the lesson.

Notes: The modification for the Classroom Policies and Procedures worked well.
Students struggled with following directions for the BioPoem. Periods 1 & 3 did not need
examples for the majority of the BioPoem steps. However, this period does have a high SPED
population, so I should have anticipated that there would be some confusion in the BioPoem. I
accommodated this need by creating on-the-spot examples with the class. The poem went more
smoothly once students saw concrete examples of what it expected of them.

Notes: Class ended right before we discussed the Pre-Unit Assessment. To accommodate for
time, this class will skip the the unpacking of Unit 4 EA1 and the activity in the Poetry Corner.
Students still need to do the Pre-Unit Assessment, so I will allot fifteen minutes of next class
period. The unpacking of the embedded assessment can be done closer to the assessment
date at the end of April.
Class was very rowdy and difficult to calm down. Students 3, 8, 9, 10, 16, 22, and 24 caused a
disruption in class because they were discussing something that happened in a tv show. I tried
out a strategy that my supervisor suggested, which is to ask for quiet and then wait until it is
given to me. Students took three minutes to quiet down and still continued to intermittently make
noise throughout the class. Also, students continuously asked me to use the restroom during
class. Having to write a pass for each student takes up valuable instruction time. I will confer
with my cooperating teacher to see what kind of solutions we can come up with for classroom
management and bathroom policies.
