Final Exam Essay

As our semester comes to an end, I have visibly noticed an improvement in my writing. A
big key to my success was the introduction of the WOVE communication modes. With each
category, we learned different lessons in class that I practiced to perfect my overall performance
in the class. In this essay I will talk about how I plan to continue to grow through these modes
even as I leave my ENG150 course.
In this semester I was introduced to WOVE and all of its aspects. The first aspect we
went over was the written mode. This was the mode we used most throughout our semester so I
would say it was the mode I became most comfortable with. Having practiced the W aspect, we
later learned in assignment #3 that oral presentations would also be an important part of this
class. In our first assignment working on the oral aspect, we were paired in groups and we were
to give one big group presentation. Something important that I learned through this assignment
was the important of communication in working in groups. We had to all be prepared and
organized so this took a lot of out of class work. Our presentation went well and when our next
oral assignment came around, I was more than confident to speak on my own. In assignment #5 I
once again had to give an oral presentation to the class, but this time it was over a topic of my
choice. Although I had spoken in front of the class before, this assignment was going to be
different. Assignment #5 covered not only the oral mode but it included the OVE aspects. This

presentation was going to be different because we needed to create a visual to present. In creating
my visual, I also got a little practice in the electronic aspect when I created my brochure.
Something important I learned from my oral presentation was the importance of body language.
Although I had a loud clear voice, looking back on my feedback I realize how big of a part
nonverbal communication played in any presentation. One of the best examples of an assignment
that contained all aspects is the one Im working on now, assignment #6. After having practice in
WOVE from earlier assignments, this assignment was a great way to show our progress in all the
modes.
To sum it all up, this course has taught me tools that I will continue to use in my writings
and other WOVE modes for the rest of my life. Something important that I have realized is that
the best way to advance in these aspects is by practicing them. From the beginning of the
semester, I think I have improved most in the W category. I think a big part of this was because
we used this aspect in nearly every assignment. Reflecting on this course and looking into the
future, I think my weakest aspect in this course was the oral mode. Knowing that this is going to
be one of the most important modes we use in day to day activities, it is important for me to
continue to practice presenting in front of groups and work on my body language and
enthusiasm. All WOVE modes are important however, and wanting to improve in all of them, I
will continue to practice all aspects because this class has showed me how practice improves my
skills. I am thankful I learned these lessons early so I can continue to practice them throughout
my college experience.
