Bill Smart

As I write this letter, its 55 degrees outside and the snow is melting fast...
spring is not far off. It has been one very long winter to say the least. I hope everyone had the
chance to spend time with their loved ones and enjoyed the off-season.
I was not able to attend the GIS show in San Antonio this year, but from what I have heard it was
a great time all around. I was able to get to Disneyworld with my family, it was a wonderful week
to spend time with family and friends and enjoy temps in the 70s. Disney is a great place! Ill
need to hit the lotto to pay it offmy wallet is hurting for sure. You only live once, and the
excitement on my girls faces seeing the characters and enjoying the parks was priceless.
I wish everyone a good start to the season! Hopefully Mother Nature will bless us with nice
weather to allow the courses to take shape. Also, I hope the golfers have the itch to get out and
play to increase business and get a jump start for an excellent year.
Good luck to all for a successful year! If you need anything, please feel free to contact me.
Thanks,
Matt Topazio

Hollow Brook GC to Host the HVGCSA May Meeting

The Hollow Brook Golf Club and
Superintendent Guy Gurney are
pleased to host this springs first solo
HVGCSA meeting. This gala event is
scheduled for Monday, May 11th.
Hollow Brook was the creation of
Architect and CEO Eric Bergstol of
Empire Golf. Robert Wolfie
Wolverton was the grow in
superintendent at Hollow Brook (his
first supers job) back in the early
2000s before he moved on to
oversee construction at Bayonne GC
for Empire. Ownership changed
hands a few years back and the
course is now owned by
entrepreneur Steve Torsoe. Host Guy
Gurney, superintendent of Hollow
Brook since January of 2013,
describes Hollow Brook as a shot
makers course. The layout has been
characterized as tight as Tim
Garceau when it comes time to buy a
round of drinks with lots of fescue
rough framing the narrow fairways.
The bunkering and greens surrounds
are difficult to navigate, so accurate
approach shots are key to a good
score. The course plays 6900 yards
from the tips so its a true test of golf.
Dont forget to wear your big boy

pants. You too, Susan!!

About Guy Gurney:
Our host Guy Gurney grew up in
Fairfield, CT. Guys introduction to
the golf course maintenance
industry could be described as
following in an older brothers
footsteps. My brother Shane,
when he was 16, got a job at
Brooklawn CC in Connecticut on the
maintenance crew, Guy
remembered. Naturally, when I
was 16, I did the same thing. Guy
enjoyed his work at the club and
had found his calling.
He enrolled at UCONN and received
his bachelors degree in Agronomy
with a concentration in Turfgrass
Science. Guy left Brooklawn briefly
to work at Aspetuck Valley. He had
again followed his older brother
Shane, who had gone there for a
job. Guy returned to Brooklawn
after a year and a half for an
assistants position under Peter Bly.
I learned a lot from Peter, Guy
stated, We did a lot of in house
projects, drainage, building tees,
constructing bunkers. It was real
hands on. That experience was
4

invaluable to me when I got my

first supers position at Orange
County.
In November of 2006 Guy was
hired as Orange County GCs new
superintendent. Working at
Orange County was a great
experience, Guy says, The club
gave me a lot of freedom to run
the golf course and really tried to
provide me with the funds and the
backing to be successful. It was all
working until Mother Nature dealt
Orange County a series of crippling
blows that they werent able to
recover from. In 2011, ice damage
wiped out 19 out of the 20 greens
on the course and they had to be
dug out and re-sodded, Guy
cringed, and in August of that
year Hurricane Irene and Tropical
Storm Lee dumped 20 inches of
rain on the course within a week,
which basically flooded just about
everything and spelled the end for
Orange County. The course
couldnt recover financially and
was sold in the winter of 2012. It
is now known as West Hills GC.

John OKeefe, CGCS

Director of golf course management at Preakness Hills
Country Club and a HVGCSA member since 2004 was
elected President of the GCSAA at the annual meeting
in San Antonio, February 26, 2015.

Congratulations, John!

Hudson Valley News of Interest!

While heading home from this years NYSTA Lobby Day in Albany, Ernie Steinhofer discovered that he had
inadvertently left his cell phone in former Assembly Speaker (currently under federal indictment for fraud
and embezzlement) Sheldon Silvers office bathroom. Ernie and his Hudson Valley contingent hurried back
to Empire State Plaza and Ernie ran to Sheldons office to retrieve his phone. It was sitting right where he
left it, to the right of Silvers diamond studded bidet on top of an Italian marble and fur lined cigar humidor
across from a solid gold toilet. Ernie was physically coerced by the office staff to donate $500 to Silvers defense fund before he was allowed to leave with his phone.
Garrison CC superintendent Jeff Newell is back in the saddle again. After years of traversing a good number
of online dating sites with limited success, Jeff has finally found his dream site. It was almost by accident
said Jeff, I was at my regular appointment at Garrisons Hair Club for Men talking to this guy in the waiting
room and he told me about a new dating website that the Hair Club for Women had set up. The website is
appropriately called mscueballdateme.com. Ive been on a few dates already, Jeff reported, Its much
easier to have a successful relationship when you have something in common.
Brae Burn superintendent Blake Halderman escaped serious injury at this years GIS in San Antonio after a
freak accident in his hotel room. Trying to iron his pants at 5am in his hotel room bathroom after a night of
heavy drinking, Blake lost his balance and fell into the bathtub. Blakes longtime friend Glen Dube commented, I found him the next morning tangled up in the shower curtain. He couldnt move. He must have
finished ironing those pants though because there wasnt a wrinkle in them.
Hollow Brooks Guy Gurney reports that he has given up his cigarette habit after a bout of pneumonia. Its
been five months. Known for his prior bouts of road rage, Guy is very cognizant of the fact he will need to
be careful on the roads considering his past history. I wear two nicotine patches and chew Nicorette gum
when I drive to stay calm, Guy reported, So far there have been no incidents, that is, that Ive been
charged for. Stay tuned!!
Kevin Collins

Hollow Brook GC to Host the HVGCSA May Meeting...contd

Guy worked for the new owners for a year before heading over the river to Hollow Brook. Before leaving
West Hills, Guy used his construction skills to build five new holes in house. Operators and laborers

were procured on the internet. It was the only golf course built by Craigs list, Guy laughed.
Hollow Brook is in its 10th year of operation and owner Steve Torsoe is always looking to improve
the facility. Last summer a new pool project was completed to create a more family friendly
atmosphere at the club to attract new members. Guy has been and is tweaking the golf course by
rebuilding the bunkers, installing new liners, and working to improve the greens surrounds.
On a personal note, Guy and his lovely wife Sheri will be celebrating their 14 th wedding anniversary
this year. Guy and Sheri have three children, Presley 12, Pierce 10, and Payton 8. They reside in
Westtown, NY.
See you at Hollow Brook!!

HVGCSA Bids a Fond Farewell to Ineke Again!

The Hudson Valley Newsletter dates back to
1963, founded by William (Bill) Smart. In 2006
the Association struggled to find an editor to
replace Charlie Ferb The Ferbmiester who
had retired and moved to Florida. This is
when Ineke decided to throw her hat into the
ring and take on the position, she added her
own twist to it and turned it into the bright
and colorful newsletter that you have enjoyed
over the past 7 years.

As most of you know, Ineke retired July 2013 as

the HVGCSA Executive Secretary, but she continued as the editor of the Foreground Newsletter
until her decision to step down in December
after completing the final issue for 2014.

A huge thank you to Ineke for all her years of

service and dedication to the HVGCSA!

Retirement is just too busy said Ineke, after

returning from 3 weeks vacation in Mexico and
heading out to spend time with her grandkids for
the Holidays. Also, she did mention that not being secretary makes it difficult to keep up with
the latest HV news.

Winter Meeting /NYSTA Seminar

Gearing Up
By: Christopher Kemble

Its that time of year

again! The vacation is
over and the grind
begins. We suffered a
long and cold winter
in the northeast. There is no doubt most
superintendents are looking at some
form of winter damage on their golf
courses. Time to accept the challenge.
Weather is the ultimate adversary of the
superintendent. We are in a never ending
game of chess. As a superintendent it is
our responsibility to win that game.
Everyone will be tested at some point in
their career. The best superintendents
are the ones who can bounce back from
adversity. Turn your knowledge and
experience into proof why youre the
right guy for the job.
Keep looking forward. We have some
exciting meetings and events lined up for
this year. These functions are a great
time to get the kink out of your neck
from looking down at the turf all day.
This will be my first year of many, serving
on the board. Im excited serve to and
socialize with our great community of
superintendents in the Hudson valley.

NYSTA Working For You

The 16th Annual New York State Turfgrass
Advocacy Day was held March 11 at the State
Capitol in Albany, attended by 49 Green Industry professionals who made 71 legislative
visits. Your valued membership in NYSTA
provides the association resources to put on
this event that:
Protects you and your business from losing
the tools you need to perform your job;
Prevents any new onerous regulations from
impacting our industry;
Advocates for the repeal of, or changes to,
laws or regulations that financially impact
your business.

Following the briefing session, the legislative

visits were conducted. Key committees targeted
for visits were Environmental Conservation and
Agriculture. Issues highlighted were:
$150,000 Appropriation for the Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Fund - the recommendation to legislators was for the Legislature to
restore the $150,000 budget line item so research
can continue to preserve and protect environmental quality. Part of the funding for the Golf
Course Best Management Practices project came
from this fund.
Parity for Category 3A & 3B Pesticide License
Fees the recommendation to legislators was to
reduce the license fee for those categories from
$200/yr. to $150/year and put those categories on
the same 3 year registration cycle as the rest of
the classifications.

The event kicked off with an association

breakfast and welcoming remarks by NYSTA
President Tim Hahn. Jeff Williams of the
New York Farm Bureau and Rick Zimmerman of The Vandervort Group spoke on the
legislative climate in Albany, State budget
issues, and gave attendees some tips for making their visits effective. It was reported that
we have a pro-industry Senate, but at the
same time face challenges with the Assembly
especially in dealing with environmental
issues.

The New York Farm Viability Institute - visits

were centered on providing increased funding
for the Institute, which has in the past provided
funding for research in sod production and provides research funding for a large number of agricultural and horticultural projects.
Repeal of the Pesticide Use Reporting Law - our
attendees advocated for the complete repeal of
the Pesticide Reporting Law which mandates
that certified pesticide applicators annually report their pesticide sales and use to DEC.

Senator Thomas OMara, chair of the Senate

Environmental Conservation Committee
spoke to the group and expressed his interest
in our issues. He was pleased to report that
the Senate had included $175,000 in their
budget for the Turfgrass Environmental
Stewardship Fund. The Senate budget also
supports our issue dealing with parity on
commercial pesticide applicator fees.

Assemblywoman Gunther has introduced legislation to put that definition into statute.
Healthy Pollinators: A Complex Challenge - In
visits with legislators, attendees acknowledged
there are serious issues facing the health of our

pollinators, and support the formation by the Department of Agriculture & Markets of a stakeholder task
force to address these issues.
In the meantime, we recommended the legislature
take no action banning the neonicotinoid class of
pesticides as there is Adoption of a State Definition of
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Attendees advocated that the following IPM definition become
law: Integrated Pest Management means a systematic approach to managing pests that utilizes a diversity of management options to minimize health, environmental and economic risks and impacts. These
options may include biological, cultural, and chemical
tools to prevent pest infestations or reduce them to
acceptable levels. Senator Young and no conclusive
proof that these pesticides are the primary cause of
these issues.
A Thank You goes out to our sponsors Hudson
Valley GCSA, Long Island GCSA, MetGCSA, the Sullivan County Challenge, RISE, Syngenta, Bayer, Helena,
Dow AgroSciences, NSLGA, PLANET, Central NY GCSA,
and the Northeastern GCSA.

New Editor
Greetings HVGCSA Members!
Ive had the pleasure of meeting many of you
at Golf Meetings and Seminars over the past 2
years. Im looking forward to taking over the
editors position from Ineke. It will give me a
chance to use my creative side.
The only request I got from the Board is to
keep it light hearted with a sense of humor,
nothing too stuffy. As long as I have Kevin
Collins writing his articles, I think Ill be okay.
Any members that would like to post an article
or photo please send it to me

GIS 2015 Recap with a Northeast Region Bias
Below are several clips from GCSAA press releases that have been compiled to highlight the recognitions of members in our region,
as well as a look at the Golf Industry Show (GIS) by the numbers. My hope was also to include Turf Bowl results for our regional
teams, but that information has yet to be unpacked. I did write a short paragraph below on the success of one regional student
chapter.
I hope those of you that attended had a successful GIS. Whether education, trade show, networking, or all three were your goals, I
hope GCSAA provided the tools you needed to get the most out of your show. If you have any suggestions, questions, or concerns,
please feel free to reach out. GCSAA is always looking to make improvements for you, the members, at future shows.
GCSAA 2015 President
John J. OKeefe, director of golf course management at Preakness Hill Country Club in Wayne, N.J., has been elected to a one-year
term as president of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) for 2015. OKeefe, a certified golf course superintendent (CGCS), served as vice president of the association in 2014 and has been a member of the associations board of directors since 2008. A 35-year member of GCSAA, OKeefe also is a member and past president of both the GCSA of New Jersey and the
Metropolitan GCSA. A native of Lenox, Mass., the 58-year-old OKeefe earned an associates degree from the Stockbridge School of
Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
2015 Col. John Morley Distinguished Service Award
Melvin B Lucas Jr., retired CGCS, has been an association member for 52 years, serving on the board of directors from 1974-81 and
holding the title of GCSAA president in 1980. In addition, the 72-year-old Lucas has served as agronomy consultant for more than
60 golf course projects. A graduate of Penn State University where he earned his degree in turfgrass management, Lucas began his
career as an assistant superintendent at Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley, N.Y., in 1961. He continued to be associated with Piping
Rock and nearby Garden City Golf Club in Garden City, N.Y., for most of his career, until 1985, when he took on the role of golf architect and superintendent at Round Hill Community Golf Club in South Dartmouth, Mass. He also served the Long Island Golf
Course Superintendents Association as an executive committee member for seven years and was that associations president from
1973-75. Since his retirement in 1991, he has continued to serve the golf course management profession as a consultant both domestically and abroad.
Tweet Bowl Rally sponsored by John Deere
While no Northeast region school managed to crack the top 10 in the Turf Bowl, one unlikely participant managed to grab some
cash anyway. The University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario Canada, captured the Tweet Bowl Rally by flooding Twitter and engaging
followers to utilize #Guelph_TurfBowl and #GIS2015. Well the efforts landed the group a check for $500 (or just over $600 Canadian). As one student mentioned, thats like coming in 6th place. Doesnt take long in this business to learn that trophies are nice,
but it is all about the cash!

2015 Golf Industry Show numbers
Education proved a top priority for superintendents this week in San Antonio. While overall attendance for the Golf
Industry Show was slightly down from the 2014 event in Orlando at approximately 12,400 the final number of
seminar seats sold, as well as exhibit space, was up.
The GCSAA Education Conference, held in conjunction with the Golf Industry Show, is the largest educational conference
in the turfgrass management industry. A total of 5,385 seminar seats were filled, 12 percent higher than expected and 3
percent higher than Orlando. In addition, thousands attended complimentary forums, sessions and panel discussions
throughout the week. Subject matter included agronomics, business, environmental management, communications,
leadership, technology, and personnel management.
A total of 5,600 qualified buyers attended the two-day trade show, which included 551 exhibitors (a 2 percent increase
over projections) covering 182,000 square feet of exhibit space at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

Outreach Hits the Airwaves
Katrek and Maginnes On Tap, one of the most popular programs on the PGA Tour Satellite Radio Network, did a
broadcast live from the Golf Industry Show in San Antonio. The association also will continue as a yearlong advertiser
with the show to promote the superintendent profession. You can find the show on Sirius channel 208 and XM channel
93. In addition, GCSAA will begin an exciting new commercial campaign.

New Equipment Manager membership classification approved

GCSAA members voted to introduce an equipment manager classification for association membership. The vote took
place as part of the Annual Meeting. Equipment managers will be welcomed with a complimentary introductory
membership through 2015 and can register online at www.gcsaa.org. GCSAA has compiled a collection of tools and
resources specifically for equipment managers.

This past February I had the distinct privilege of

attending my first GIS in San Antonio. The coursework was top-notch and the conversations within
each class among attendees was incredibly insightful. The trade show did not disappoint and it
was great to see some of our local distributors
there. The Noreaster was quite impressive and
had the turnout to match.
I had an interesting conversation regarding the
evolution of our roles as assistants and would really like to spotlight a few of us throughout this
season with the help of the superintendents. Our
roles are becoming more and more of the go-to
person at our clubs as the superintendents are
buried under new guidelines and reporting requirements. That in mind, Id like to get a feel
from our readers with a brief survey on how long
you have been an assistant at your current
course. Click on the link, answer just a few quick
questions and Ill post the results.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XNSTM2W
Assistants positions may not be the stepping
stones like they were in the past. The next big
thing isnt necessarily coming and I believe that
some of us are content with that. By no means
does this imply that we are not passionate or sedentary in this role. Simply maintain relationships
and you can ensure that there is room for growth
and continued development.

Rounds 4 Research
HVGCSA in doing so. Other local area clubs
donating were: Rockland CC, Brae Burn,
Centennial, Glen Arbor, Bedford Golf and
Tennis, and Trump Westchester. 80% of the
money raised through the auction is given
back to the Hudson Valley. If we can get
ten or twenty clubs to donate, we might be
able to subsidize one of our many items we
support: Legacy scholarships ($3,000) and
Bill Smart scholarship ($1,500), NYS Best
Management Practices ($10,000), Lobby Day
($500), Sullivan County Challenge ($500), Tri
State Research ($2,500) and any other research project that comes our way. These are
all great ways to improve the way we do OUR
jobs at OUR facilities.

Rounds 4 Research is a program that

was developed by the Carolinas GCSA.
They started this program to help raise
money for their associations for turf research, lobbying efforts, and scholarships.
The GCSAAs philanthropic organization,
the Environmental Institute For Golf
(EIFG) has now taken the Rounds to a national level. Each local chapter can now
raise money for their own association.
I have been through the donating process twice. It is very easy to sign up and
start raising funds for OUR Hudson Valley GCSA. Your first step is to garner a
round (for a twosome or foursome) from
your golf pro or general manager. Then go
to the website, www.rounds4research.com.
You will be asked a few basic questions
about the item you will be donating and
your facility (dress code, food and beverage, caddies etc), its that easy. The next
auction is in June of this year.

Please take a little time out of your day, before

we get moving out on the golf course, to donate a round today. We will all benefit from it.
Thank you,
Dan Wilber
