Argument Essay
War and terrorism is a huge issue around the world. Whether it is a single person
committing the act or a terrorist group, terrorism can happen all over the world and in some cases
it can happen from within our own country. But what actually causes terrorism and what causes
people to commit terrorist acts? There are many factors that cause terrorism that may lead to war.
The United States and other countries against terrorism cant specifically tell them to stop
fighting. The best we can do to stop terrorism and terrorists attacks is to inform people and try to
seek out and prevent any terrorism that might happen. I would like to discuss some of these
causes and theories as well as my own thoughts and theories in this essay.
Terrorism goes way, way back in history. It has always been a way for a country or group
to terrorize and scare an opposing enemy. But there has got to be a more specific reason why the
terrorists would kill lots of people other than to just scare them or cause havoc. While
researching, I have come across many interesting theories and or possible reasons why terrorism
continues to be a treat and scare for many countries around the world. The first being that it is
religiously related.
There is such thing as radicals or extremists. The most commonly talked about group we
know of is the radical Islam. Some of these people believe that they must kill to be accepted by
their higher being. Just as in the same way some indigenous Amazonian tribes believe that to

become a man they must kill another man. So what can we do about these radicals and their
beliefs? Well as far as we know we cant change the way they believe and we cant instruct them
to not do these things. Religion is a big thing around the whole world. We cant tell the whole
world how to be religious or what they are supposed to believe in.
One red light in the way of this theory is in a case study by Robert Pape from the
University of Chicago who compiled over 300 suicide bombings from 1980 to 2004. He says that
many of these bombings and attacks we had thought to be strictly religious, turn out to be more
of a result of geopolitics. Political issues around the world can cause a lot of people to disagree
with government and rulings. Thus causing retaliation towards the government by citizens and
even these groups we call radicals and extremists. Another thought on this theory is that these
radicals say it is for religious reasons, but it could also be a cover up to justify their actions and
keep other people from getting in the way. Its almost as if they are blaming their acts on
religious beliefs. The truth of this phenomena is still unclear, but many people are trying to
investigate this in more detail to figure out if this could be a cause of why they act under religion.
Our armed forces in other countries is also believed to be a factor in terrorism. The
United States pretty much fits the category of the worlds police. We are stationed all across the
world and have intelligence agencies in many countries. Another source of terrorism can stem
from this. The fact we are on their land is a reason for terrorists to act out. They do not like the
fact we are on their land and want us gone. Many people today are somewhat racists towards
middle-easterners because of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade centers in New York of
2001. People dont want to associate with them because they are looked down upon as terrorists
or a part of a terrorists group just based on their ethnicity. Morally we are supposed to love
everyone and accept everyone for who they are, but this may be a different situation. In the

education system in the middle-eastern countries like Iran teach a more extreme Islam religion to
their students. We cant change this though but we can try to help them understand better and
understand more moral practices of their religion.
So the big question is how can we as a nation or multiple nations solve and put a stop to
terrorism? Well going into deeper research I read an article on American terrorism in other
countries such as Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan and Syria. If we are trying to stop terrorism from
happening in other countries then we ourselves should stop terrorizing other countries and their
people. This is simple to understand; would we like it if another country came into ours and tried
running our government and telling us what and what not to do as well as shoot and kill our
citizens? The answer is probably no. This is exactly how other countries feel when we are on
their soil doing what we think is best. Is it right to try to scare and terrorize other countries so
much so that they completely stop their terrorism? Of course its not right. Its not even moral to
do this. Many Americans dont look at what we do in other countries as terrorism; one because
they think that we are doing the right thing and two because they support our country.
The United States is in the war on terrorism and is fighting the terrorists groups
committing these terrorist attacks. We bomb and shoot cities as a whole in these countries and we
kill innocent people. That includes children. Do we care? Doesnt seem like it. If we did care we
would not do such things. It also seems like we target a certain group of people; Muslims, thirdworld countries, and minorities. Even attacks from within our own country fall into these 3
categories.
What can we do to stop terrorism? Some say we should declare war on Iran and eliminate
their government and military bases. We should also pull our troops out of these middle-eastern
countries because like I mentioned earlier its only making the problem worse. So how do we

fight a war we declared without troops? We use air attacks. We have a strong Airforce and we
should use it to our advantage and save American lives by not putting them in the direct line of
duty. We should issue a threat to other similar countries that explains to them how we are not
afraid and we will take out their forces and government in the same way we would do to Iran.
How does all of this sound to you? It might sound like a bad idea because many innocent lives
would be taken. But this idea of stopping terrorism may just do the trick. Scare the crap out of
our enemy. Not kill civilians but government officials and enemy armed forces. Break them at
the back bone and rebuild their society to a free world. These countries dont understand what a
free world is because they have been brought up in harsh and hatred environments. Some to even
hate Americans.
All in all terrorism is a very bad thing regardless of who is doing it. We can try and try to
stop it but it somehow circles back around and happens again. We can bring our forces out of the
middle-east and let them fight their own civil war and we can stay out of it. Religion seems to be
the back bone behind terrorists groups, radicals, and extremists, but we are unable to fix the
problem. Their political issues in their country can lead to their own terrorism against their own
country but we as a nation and as a leader in the War on Terrorism should stay out of it, protect
our own boarders and keep the people of the United States safe on home soil. We should
continue to support our allies and work together to end terrorism.
