Function of the Lesson (check all that apply):
Introduce New Skill or Content

Practice

Remediation/Re-teaching

Context for Learning:

There are 21 students in the class, 11 girls and 10 boys. Four students are on IEPs.
Content Standards:
LS.K.2 Physical and Behavioral Traits of Living Things
LS.1.1.1 Living things have basic needs, which are met by obtaining materials from the physical
environment
Learning Objectives (aligned to assessment plan):
Students will be able to label parts of a flower (roots, flower, soil, petals, stem, leaf) with 100% accuracy.
Students will be able to state 2 things about a seed.
Students will be able to name the basic things a plant needs to grow (water, soil, sunlight) with 100%
accuracy.
Academic Language (Academic Language Demands and/or Academic Language Objectives):
Seeds
Roots
Water
Sunlight
Soil
Life cycle

Assessment Plan (aligned to learning objectives)

Formative Assessment: Students will be participating with the smart board activities. They will be
labeling plants, filling in the life cycle of a plant, and identifying plants vs. animals. I will watch and assess their
ability to do those things.

Summative Assessment: Students will take a paper quiz at the end of the lesson labeling the parts of a
flower and filling in a chart of the plant cycle using a word bank.
Procedures: Lesson Introduction
I will introduce the lesson by taking the students outside to observe the parts of nature that we will be
discussing. They will each find a flower, a seed, and a leaf.
Tell students they will be learning about plants more in depth and what they need to survive.
Procedures: Lesson Body
Presentation/Explicit Instruction (I do: 100% teacher, 0% student):
o Use the SMART board presentation to present items in nature with regards to plants.
o Have students raise their hands to describe each item on the board and where in nature they see it.
o They can use their prior knowledge to answer these questions.
Structured Practice/Exploration (We do: 75% teacher, 25% student):
o Student will label parts of a flower with teacher assistance. They will give coral response for each
part and I will write it on the board.
o After we finish going through each part I will erase the answers we gave as a class

Students will raise their hands to come up to the board and drag labels onto the flower.
In order to ensure all students are learning and participating, I will walk around the room to see if
students are participating in choral response.
Guided Practice/Checking for Understanding (We do: 25% teacher, 75% student):
o We will read aloud the passage about seeds on the smart board and answer the questions pertaining
to the passage.
o I will go back and forth from the passage to the questions as needed.
Independent Practice/Application (They do: 0% teacher, 100% student):
o At the end of the smart board lesson there are questions that the students will answer using the
smart board. Each student will have a turn to go up to the board and answer parts of a question.
Procedures: Lesson Closure:
Students will take an exit quiz to sum up their learning. The quiz will ask them to label the parts of a flower
using a word bank, name 2 things about seeds, and name the 3 basic things that plants need from nature to
grow.
We will then plant a seed to lead us into the next lesson about
Differentiation, Individualized Instruction, and Assessment:
Students who are visual learners can learn easily in this lesson through the smartboard pictures and words
on the screen. Students who are auditory learners will also learn well because I will read each slide and
explain aloud what is expected.
Students who need extra support can draw pictures for their answers on the quiz to show they understand
the concepts.

Use of Technology Commentary (as applicable):

The technology used in this lesson was vitally important to the success of the lesson. The smartboard lesson
included all of the components to teach the students about plant parts, the life cycle, and seeds. The
interactive slides makes the lesson more interesting for students.
