Name: Meteorologist Reports for Climate Zones Grade: 3 Date: 4/28/16 Time Frame: 60 mins.
Content Area: Science Topic: Climate and Drama Central Focus: To express knowledge on different
climates through a meteorologist report/presentation of a given region and month with a logical weather
forecast and wardrobe option.
Lesson Overview
Next Generation Science Standards:
1. ESS2. D: Weather and Climate
Climate describes a range of an areas typical weather conditions and the extent to which those
conditions vary over years. (3-ESS2-2)
National Standards for Theater:
1. Acting by assuming roles and interacting with improvisations
Objective/SWBAT: Students will be able to
List characteristics of the four different climates around the world from examining past weather patterns.
Perform a meteorologist report in front of their peers using appropriate costumes, gestures and tone of
voice based on given city and climate zone.
Rationale: It is important for students to learn this because of the growing opportunities to travel to new
locations and to be aware of the different natural disasters that can affect the different areas in different
climate zones. The weather, which varies in each type of climate, affects the daily lives of everyone from
clothing, food, transportation, communication and shelter.
Summative Assessment of Lesson Objective(s):
Students meteorologist reports are correct for
the climate of the given city.

Evaluation Criteria:
Correct includes a meteorologist report with proper
weather forecast based the climate zone and past
weather patterns and appropriate choice of
costume.

Planned Supports: Differentiation, Accommodations/Modifications (meeting the needs of all students)

1. The meteorologist report can be filmed prior to the date of the lesson for those students who have
behavioral or learning disorders that require multiple opportunities to perform. This can be done with their
aide, school social worker, at home or with the teacher before or after school.
2. The name of the city and the climate zone can be given the day before to the students who are English
Language Learners or have anxiety so that they are able to have more time to prepare what they want to say
and practice their language, pronunciation and strategies to eliminate their nerves.
3. The process of the meteorologist report can be modified so that the weather report is already given to the
students based on the climate zone. This is for the students who have a learning disability or students with a
high level of anxiety about having the correct information before performing in front of the class.

Instructional Materials/Technology
Materials: a variety of clothing options for students to choose from to be dressed properly for their given
climate zone, post it notes slips for the exit slip, assignment sheets with given city and climate zone.
Technology: Smartboard and program that allows students to insert/move pictures onto a pre-made template
of a six day forecast to change it for their given city and climate zone
Key Lesson Elements
Opening 5-7 minutes
Warm- Up Activity called Two Truths, One Lie
The teacher will read three statements about the 4 major climate areas (Tropical, Subarctic, Polar and
Temperate) but one statement will be false. The students will be instructed to raise their hand to tell which
statement is wrong and why. (Repeat 4 times for each climate area)
Include Elements Below as Appropriate
Review/Modeling/Presentation 10 minutes
1. Review the four different climate zones. List characteristics of each climate zone and name parts of
the world in each climate zone.
2. Ask if the class to raise their hand if they know whom a meteorologist is and select three students to
respond.
3. Ask how many students have seen a weather forecast done by a meteorologist before.
4. Ask what are some characteristics of a good meteorologist report and select three students to
respond.
5. Explain the assignment. In pairs you are going to perform a meteorologist report in front of the class
based on the climate zone and city that you are given. Each person is going to choose clothes to
appropriately match the climate zone. One partner will give a weather forecast for Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday and the other partner will give a weather forecast for Thursday, Friday and
Saturday. This performance should be about one to two minutes long.
6. Play my video example on the projector. I was given Antarctica in the polar climate zone and here is
my weather forecast for those citizens, but I doubt there are any permanent citizens.
7. Ask students what characteristics they think the teacher is looking for based on the sample video and
select four to five responses.
8. Place students into partners that are already arranged by the teacher.
Guided Practice/Checks for Understanding 10 minutes
1. Hand out worksheets to each pair of students. This worksheet gives them their city and their climate
zone.
2. Tell the students to write down their weather forecast on this worksheet so they can quickly move the
images on the SmartBoard for their performance.
3. Tell students to list the items of clothing that they see that they want to wear and to make sure that
each partner is wearing appropriate clothing for that climate zone.
4. Give a five to six minute limit for this to be completed.
5. Walk around the room and listen to conversations between pairs and notice what they have written
down to make sure it is appropriate.
Independent Practice
1. Call students in a specific order to perform their weather forecast.

2. While one group is performing have the next pair be getting dressed. Remind them to be quite and
respectful.
3. When giving feedback to the one groups performance, the next group should be arranging their
weather forecast on the SmartBoard as they have it on their worksheet.
4. Continue the process until each pair has performed and each video has been played.
Closing
After presentations have ended, hand out post-it notes and ask the students to write down two characteristics
of two different types of climates, and for a bonus they can add a city that was presented on into each of the
climate zones they picked.
