What is my 10%?
Intro
Studies have shown that 45 minutes after a lecture students can hardly remember what
was said in the lecture. In fact it is said that people like you and me only remember about 10% of
what we are taught. James Altucher suggests that there are only a few ways that we actually learn
something; by doing it, watching it, reading it, thinking about it, talking about it, loving it, and
repeating it. I must agree to this theory; there is so much that myself as a college student must
intake in a total of five classes, and it is impossible for me to remember what was said from a
9:30 lecture till my last class at 2:00. But, throughout this semester Ive learned how to practice
and do what I want to retain. This has been a major concept while being in the Writing in a
Digital World class. There are a lot of things that I would like to take with me but a few I will not
forget and will be useful throughout my future academic and professional career.

Canva was something that I did, talked about, loved, and repeated. It would be impossible
to forget this technique/skill. This skill taught me how to make pictures my own, and it taught me
how to match pictures and colors with words
that had meaning. Canva to me brought a
whole new addition to just uploading
pictures. The way it works is you get a free
picture from pixabay or Flickr/creative
commons, you upload it on canva and you
add words and style to the picture. We practice this in class and out of class when doing our 6word memoirs. This is a technique that I will continue to use throughout my future academic
career because it gives the picture a better look/feel as I was taught. An example of this technique
is provided for you.
In contrast, a parenthetical reference is a reference within the body of your paper to one of the
sources in your reference list. It shows exactly what you took from the source and where the

reader can find it. You use a parenthetical reference when you are using material directly from
the source, paraphrased in your words, or when referring to an idea derived from the material.
Some examples of parenthetical references are:
Signal Phrases and Parenthetical References will continue to be used throughout my future
academic and professional career because it is something that will
never not be used. This technique will forever be helpful.

Blogger was fun but very organized type fun. It taught me how to style a page so that it was
appealing to readers to look at and want to engage in. It showed me how to organize a blog so
that it would be right to the point and easy to read. The pictures, colors, and fonts were nice
touches to the blog and also took a lot of critical thinking. Blogger is useful for future academic
and career purposes because it has taught me how to design and engage readers online with
informal writing. I even have looked into started a new blog.
Conclusion
This is the 10% that I am taking from this class that I feel has been most helpful. These
are the techniques/skills that I will take with me throughout my future academic and professional
career. All of the techniques have helped me and taught me things that are impossible for me to
forget. So that my take away and I guess James Altucher was right those steps do work when
you think about it.
