Artifact 1: Governance
Dale Erquiaga is the Nevada State Superintendent of Public Instruction. He was
appointed into this position by Governor Brian Sandoval in 2013. As the superintendent,
Erquiaga advises the Governor on educational policy. Cambron-McCabe, McCarthy, & Thomas
state that the role of superintendent oversees the duties such as research and long range
planning, monitoring reform initiatives, and adjudicating education controversies (Legal
Rights of Teachers and of Students 3). He currently resides in Reno, Nevada and is a member of
the advisory board of the Center for Basque Studies at University of Reno.
The Clark County Superintendent is Pat Skorkowsky and he was appointed into position
by the approval of the school board. He has many of the same duties as the State Superintendent
only on a smaller scale. He works closely with the school board and discusses the districts
budgets, making sure the curriculum is adequate and up to date, ensure that employees are all
qualified, etc. He would also keep the lines of communication open to the community of Clark
County and the school board and work together to ensure their students education and futures.
There are currently ten members of the Nevada State School Board with one vacancy.
Theres the President, Elaine Wynn, Governor Appointment Allison Serafin the Vice President,
District 3, Dave Cook, District 2, Alexis Gonzales-Black, District 1, Freeman Holbrook,
Assembly Appointment, Teri Jamin, NASB Appointment, Kevin Melcher, Board of Regents
Appointment, Kamryn Mock, Student Representative Appointment, Mark Newburn, District 4,
and Jeff Zander, NASS Appointment. They, along with Erquiaga, work together to make
decisions over the education system state-wide. They oversee school and district budgets, pick
the best curriculum, and discuss and expand on school policy. Besides the President, each

member is voted by the state.


There are seven members of the Clark County School Board, also known as the Board of
Trustees. Theres the President, Erin E. Cranor of District G, Vice President Linda E. Young of
District C, Clerk Patrice Tew of District E, and the Members, Stavan Corbette, Caroyln Edwards,
Chris Garvey, and Deeanna L. Wright of Districts D, F, B, A respectively. Each trustee
represents a different region and are committed to ensure the success of each and every student
of the County. All members of the Board, including the president are elected by the voters of
each district per member. They too, work with the Clark County Superintendent and govern the
districts using the model of Policy Governance.
Last but not least, our U.S Secretary of Education is Arne Duncan. He is the ninth U.S
Secretary of State and has been in office since 2009, when he was nominated by President
Barack Obama. He works on educational policy in the country, a lot of with how to save money
and how to budget. Some things he has done in the past five years since his appointment was
help get support and investment in some of President Obamas educational programs such as the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to fund over 300,000 teaching jobs. He also tries to
help low performing schools and helped increase Pell Grants. His goal is to create the highest
number of college graduates in U.S history by year 2020.
