Introduction/Overview
In the past 20 years we have seen more advancement in technology and medicine than we ever
have before. Technology and medicine go hand and hand. New technology increases research for doctors
and creates faster and easier systems among hospitals and offices. Medicine is developing constantly. In

technologies or medicines that have surfaced

the last decade, robotic surgery and other automated devices are developing worldwide. (Robotics in
medicine). Robotic assistants now plan an important role in modern medicine. Robotic operations are
becoming more prevalent in foregut, bariatric, colorectal, and other general surgical fields. However, long-

term effects have not been fully evaluated. The curriculum for these operations have not been fully
developed. In a study, they found that general surgery residents currently show limited improvement in
overall robotic skills during the course of their training (Surgical Endoscopy). What is the effect that

new technologies in medicine and quoting a specific source

robotic devices have on the Health care system and the way our doctors operate? Since robots are
becoming more and more popular in the medical field it has caused a shift in medicine as well as
curriculum for medicine. These are both positive and negative effects.

Comment [LJ4]: Good overview of the debate

Initial Inquiry Questions:

Comment [LJ5]: Good questions because they provide

many different ways to find research and explore the
possibilities of robots

1. What kind of surgerys can robots perform?

2. Do they perform major procedures?

Comment [LJ6]: Can condense into one question

3. Are these considered better than actual doctors for patients?

4. How are they training doctors and others in this field?
5. How are the robotic machines changing medical field/employment?
6. Is this changing roles for doctors?
7. How do patients feel about robots performing on them?
8. Do doctors agree or disagree with these advancements?

Comment [LJ7]: Good questions because the ones most

involved with surgeries are patients and doctors

My interest in this topic:

Since I was young as well as started to watch every episode of Greys Anatomy, I have grown an

interest in the medical field and what really goes on in it. If I had the patience and drive to actually stay

Comment [LJ8]: Love Greys connection

in school long enough to become a doctor I would, but I dont want to graduate when I am almost 30
years of age. However, I still find all medical things interesting. I also have had many long experiences
inside hospitals with both my grandmother who had Alzheimers and my grandfather who had Cancer.
From when I was in Kindergarten to 7th grade I was in and out of doctors appointments with my mom
and my grandmommy and spent majority of my time taking care of her and listening to what the doctors
said. After she passed away, 3 years later my grandfather got diagnosed with Cancer. For 5 months I was
in the hospital every single day. That is when I grew a real interest in medical advancements and what
they were actually using on my grandfather as well as grandmother. When I thought of this inquiry

question to use. I knew that it would be a good one for me to focus in on.

Comment [LJ10]: What do you already know about the

topic and what do you want to know?

Next Step:

Comment [LJ11]: Good bringing up what you need to do,

but you might need more specific courses of action. Using
specific examples of databases and sources will help you
find research easier

The next steps I plan on taking is continuing to look for good sources and information to be able
to use in my paper. I plan to make a first draft after getting additional information. I plan to peer edit
and have this and my inquiry questioned peer reviewed. I will look at more databases provided by the
library and make sure that they are reliable.

Comments:
Your topic is a great topic to focus on, simply because everyone is affected by advances in
medicine at some point in their lives. The issue is very important because of this. You do a good job
connecting with the topic and introducing the implications of new technologies in medicine. You also do
well when describing the issue, but you could benefit from talking about the specific arguments of either
using or not using technology for surgeries/medicine. Who supports the increased role of technology
and who is against it? Using 8 questions is good because it shows how many different ways you can go
with the assignment, but you might want to consider narrowing it down to maybe 4 or 5. Being specific
can help you find research and points of view. I think your connection and interest to the topic is very
strong too, and you do a good job showing how the issue is important to everyone. Overall you did a
great job explaining how technology can be used in the field of medicine, but I think using specific
examples of sources would help you a lot, because Campbell keeps drilling that in class. Other than that,
you did a great job explaining and connecting the issue of technology in medicine.
