b.) Reflection
i. How did you choose what qualities to include in your rubric?
When decided which qualities to include in my rubric I looked at both my original
SMART Goal and the first update that I had made to the SMART Goal and decided which
qualities were the most important and would reflect a well-rounded portfolio. The first quality
that I included was the necessity to make changes to the SMART Goal throughout the semester
and to adhere to those changes in an appropriate manner. I decided to include this portion of the
criteria because I believe that the changes I have made to my SMART Goal and will make as the
semester progresses are crucial to the success of the SMART Goal and the well-roundedness of
the final portfolio. The second quality that I included was the inclusion of 14 activities that
reflect SMART Goal and represent each grade level equally incorporating two lessons per grade
level, Kindergarten through 6th Grade. I decided to include this portion of the criteria because I
need to have a strict outline that tells me what I need to include in my final portfolio so that I do
not fail to meet the expectations outlined in my SMART Goal plan. The third quality that I
included was the need to directly link all 14 activities included in the final portfolio with specific
SOL tenets. I decided to include this portion of the criteria because I know that activities in the
classroom do not serve much purpose when they do not follow a specific portion of the
curriculum framework. The last quality that I included was that the final portfolio would be
completed using the Weebly website creator. I decided to include this portion of the criteria
because it is one of the main points outlined in my SMART Goal; in addition, I really enjoy
using technology and wanted to incorporate it in my portfolio in some way.
ii. Why are these qualities important based on what we have studied together
about effective science instruction?
The first quality is important based on what I have learned in this course because it
reflects the rule of three that we have discussed so often throughout the semester. Content is
not learned on the first try and because we are all learning how to set and achieve SMART Goals,
I knew that I would need to make changes as the semester progressed and adhere to those
changes in my final portfolio. The second quality is important based on what I have learned in
this course because we have analyzed, examined, and reflected upon the importance of being
thorough and inclusive in all that we do in the classroom. In addition, having a set number of
activities that needs to be included in the portfolio allows me to be assessed in a clear and direct
manner The third quality is important based on what I have learned in this course because during
each class meeting, we have discussed the importance of making every activity and lesson plan

executed within the classroom directly related to and following the SOL curriculum framework.
Not only does this give the teacher a clear guide in terms of what content they should be teaching
and in what order they should be teaching it in, but it also provides an outline of what the
students will be tested on. If the students can learn the information while also having fun and
being genuinely engaged, the teacher has been successful in teaching the content. The fourth
quality is important based on what I have learned in this course because we have frequently
discussed adequately and appropriately incorporating technology into our academic and
educational procedures. Even though this is a personal portfolio, I still wanted to involve my
extensive technological knowledge and skillset in some way.
iii. Why are these qualities important based on what you have learned throughout the semester
about your goal topic?
I believe that all of these qualities reflect my SMART Goal well and will illustrate the progress
that I have made this semester in terms of understanding how to adequately meet and address a
SMART Goal. In addition, I believe that all of these activities will be very beneficial to my
future students who are interested in the scientific field and want to share their knowledge and
experiences with their family.
iv. Where do you think your portfolio is now based on your rubric? Why?
I think that at this point in the semester, I would score twos in every category. I have not
completed my activity repertoire and my Weebly is very unorganized at this point in time. I
believe that I need to have all of the components of my portfolio ready to include into my
Weebly before I start to build and organize it in a way that reflects my vision and meets the
criteria of my SMART Goal.
v. What next steps will you take to move your portfolio to a higher level of quality before the end
of the semester?
First, I need to complete my activity repertoire and be sure that each activity reflects the criteria
outlined by my SMART Goal. In addition, I need to be sure that each activity can be directly
related to specific SOL tenets in order to ensure that these activities could and will be useful and
effective instructional strategies within the classroom. I also need to be sure that my portfolio
reflects the changes that I have made (and have yet to make) to my SMART Goal throughout the
semester. The last thing that I will do is make sure the Weebly I created adequately reflects the
first three qualities listed on the rubric that I developed and that the website is presented in an
organized and user-friendly manner. I am fully confident that I will be able to do all of these
things and create a very thorough and well-rounded portfolio.
