Chapter 10 Assignment
Philosophy of Classroom Management
My philosophy of classroom management is centered around creating and promoting a
safe, respectful, and productive learning environment which allows every student equitable
learning opportunities (Kauchak & Eggen, 308). I am committed to building a learning
community which prioritizes the welfare of all students, and facilitates effective learning while
also encouraging the active participation of students, parents, and other necessary teachers and
professionals.
Establishing a positive classroom climate and a strong sense of community on day one is
an important part of effective classroom management and will heavily influence my ability to
effectively teach. Building a strong community requires that I genuinely get to know each of my
students as individuals and encourage healthy interactions and relationships with their peers.
(Kauchak & Eggen, 310) When students feel connected to school, they are more likely to
succeed, and positive, respectful relationships with teachers and peers promotes such a
connection. (Blum, 2005) It is important to me that my students know I care about them and trust
that their success is my greatest priority.
I believe that if students are given the opportunity to participate in helping to create and
decide on class rules and procedures that are aligned with my outlined expectations of our
classroom community, they will take more responsibility for their actions and behaviors.
Including my students in building our classroom community will promote a sense of pride and

responsibility, and may help in preventing behavior problems (Kauchak & Eggen, 317).
Classroom and school rules and procedures will be enforced, both by consequences which are
understood by the student and by positive reinforcements. Under all circumstances, students will
be expected to be respectful of themselves, other students, faculty, and property which belongs to
the school and/or others. Being committed to the success of my students requires that I hold them
to high expectations that are clearly defined and understood. This includes holding them
responsible for their choices, actions, and behaviors, and being able to recognize when additional
support and/or intervention may be necessary. A positive community is one that is safe,
responsible, respectful, and caring all of which are expectations I will have of my students,
myself, and our classroom community. (Kauchak & Eggen, 314-315)
It is my responsibility as an educator to efficiently facilitate learning, and as I plan on
entering the field of Special Education, it is especially important for me to be able to plan and
adapt my instruction to meet the unique needs and abilities of all my students. While the
structure of Special Education classrooms varies across school districts, it is likely that much of
my instructional planning will include collaboration with other involved teachers and support
professionals. It will be of utmost importance that I diligently work with all involved parties to
quickly establish consistent routines, procedures, schedules, and objectives which are
individualized for each student and which facilitate successful learning of curriculum, skills, and
behaviors. Involving students parents and/or guardians is another especially important
component to building a positive and successful learning community, as parental support has
been shown to be essential to promoting cooperation and motivation within the classroom
(OConnor et al., 2011). Including parents in the teaching process will also be beneficial in that it
will allow me to know and understand my students even better, and it will encourage and allow

parents to become more involved in their childs success (Kauchak & Eggen, 321). As a Special
Educator, building a positive relationship with parents is essential to creating a productive
learning environment for my students.
Effective classroom management relies on many different components, and I recognize
that as my experience within the classroom increases, and as I grow and evolve as an educator,
my philosophy of classroom management will also evolve and change. However, the goal of
establishing and promoting a safe and effective learning community will always remain a
primary objective. Effectively managing my classroom and promoting a positive learning
environment relies on building genuine and caring relationships with my students and their
parents, creating a safe and responsible sense of community, consistently modeling and enforcing
expectations and rules, and carefully planning, collaborating, and working with various support
systems to facilitate the success of each student within the classroom as well as outside of the
classroom.
