Public Speaking Emcee Script

assalamualaikum and a very good morning to all present today.
Welcome to the district/state level Inter school English Language
public speaking competition at . I am
.. and I will be your emcee for today.
Today participants will take part in this competition. They are
from the various schools/districts from this district/state. Today we
are privileged to have 3/5 judges from the various schools/districts .

Before we proceed. I would like to read some of the rules and


guidelines that the participants have to observe throughout the
competition.
The competition is divided into two sections,
Section 1 : Prepared Speech - any topic
Section 2 : Impromptu Speech
a. For Section 1 which is the Prepared Speech, contestants are to
observe the following rules:
b. Contestants will deliver a prepared speech on a topic of their
choice for 6 minutes.
c. A warning bell will be sounded at the 5th minute and a final
bell at the 6th minute. Marks will be deducted thereafter.
d. For Section 2 which is the Impromptu Speech, contestants are
to observe the following rules
e. Contestants are given a topic four minutes before they are
due to present the speech.
f. All contestants speak on the same topic.
g. The time allocated for the impromptu speech is three minutes.
h. A warning bell will be sounded at the 2nd minute and a final
bell at the 3rd minute. Marks will be deducted thereafter.
i. The topic for the Impromptu Speech will be prepared and

provided by the district education office/ state education


department/ Division of Co-curriculum and Arts, Ministry of
Education.
j. Points will be allocated according to the scoresheet.
k. Judges will collectively determine the placing by a clear
majority vote.
l. The decision of the judges is final.
m. The judging criteria for both the Prepared Speech and the
Impromptu Speech are on two aspects as follows: Subject
Matter and the Use of Language
n. Additional judging criteria for the Impromptu Speech include
creatively, the conviction of the speaker, accuracy, relevance
of the speech and fluency of the speaker.
Ladies and gentlemen and all present, before we begin I would like
to remind everyone to turn off your mobile phones and please do
not walk in and out of the competition hall/room as it may distract
the participants. Please remain seated at all times and do not talk
while the participants deliver their speech.
We will now begin with the first part of the competition, the
prepared speech. I would like to invite the first participant to deliver
his/her speech.
Thank You to Participant No.1. (Wait for chief judge to signal before
inviting the second participant)
Now I would like to invite participant No.2 to deliver his/her speech.
Thank You to participant NO. 2.
(Continue inviting the other participants until all participants finish
with their prepared speech.)
The first part of the competition has come to an end but we have
the second part before the judges can decide on the winners. The
second part is the impromptu speech and for that I would like to
request all participants to leave this room and follow the usher to
the waiting room. There you will be briefed before being taken to
the quarantine room to prepare your impromptu speech. You will
then be ushered back to the competition room according to your
turn. Participants please follow the usher to the waiting room now.

We have come to the end of the competition. I believe everyone
here is eager to know the results. For that we have to wait for the
judges to confer. Now, I would like to invite the judges to proceed to
the judges room to confer to decide on the winners.
The results will be announced later during the prize giving
ceremony. Thank you.

Before we proceed. I would like to read some of the rules and


guidelines that the participants have to observe throughout the
competition.

This competition is open to all students of government-aided


schools from Form 1 to Form 5 only.

For the secondary school category, each team is given a


presentation time limit of 8 to 10 minutes. Marks will be deducted
thereafter.
Each team should comprise 30 to 35 pupils or students. A
conductor should be appointed amongst these pupils or students.
Selection of texts may be in the form of poetry or short prose. Texts
should preferably be original and authentic.
Adapted texts including those from previous years should be
acknowledged by citing the source.
Materials presented must not touch on sensitive issues, such as
race, religion, stereotyping, politics etc.
All participants should be in school uniform when competing.
The conductor may use gloves.
There should be no inclusion of music, drama, costume, props or
artificial sound effects.
Any inclusion of singing, skit or physical movement should enhance
and not dominate the presentation.
The arrangement of the teams on the stage will be in fixed 3-tiered
rows.
Points will be awarded according to the scoresheet.
Judges will collectively determine the placing by a clear majority
vote.
