Heat exchangers in the United Srates arc normally dcsigncd according to thc
Standards of Tubular Exchanger Manufacturn Association ITEMA)' and the
ASME Code, VLII. In general. TEMA q u i r e m e n u arc a supplemenr to the
AS.W requirements, for they tend to include arcas not discussed in the ASME.
Most of the TEMA design equations relate to rubesheet design when affected by
differential pressure and temperature. expansion joinu, busUes. and %I on.
TEUA uses alphabetical designation to differentiate betwcen various rypes of
hequmrly used components. This is illuscratcd in Fig. 14.1. The componcnfs
can be interchanged to form a wide variery of heat exchanger configurations. as
s h o w in Fig. 14.2.
Tbei rules, which apply to three diicrcnt classes of construction depending
on th wvetiry of d c e , are n f e m d to as R. C, or B. A ~mmar/of the
d i f i m bewceo t h a t clarws is given in Table 14.1.

Notes:
1. ASME specifications are preceded by SA instead of A, and have the same numerical designation (e.g. SA 193).
2. Maximum hardness shall be Rockwell C35 immediately under the thread roots. The h a r a ~ e s shall
s be taken on flat area atleast 3.0 mm across, prepared by removing
threads. Hardness shall be checked a t the same frequency of tensile tests.
3. Either Class 1 , solution treated, o r Class 2, solution treated and strain hardened may be used.
4. Carbon content shall not exceed 0.25% to permit possible field welding.

1. SCOPE
This specification lists the Japanese Standard (JIS, JPI),
British Standard (BS), and Deutshe Industrie Normen (DIN) substi-
tutes for ASTM Specifications relating to materials for plates,
pipes, tubes, forgings, castings, bolts and nuts, bars and shapes,
piping fittings;and nonferrous materials, in general use.
2. BASIS
These substitutes are not necessarily identical to the ASTM Spec-
ifications,,but are equal in terms of alloy content and have a
nearly equal or higher ultimate tensile strength; exceptions to
this are underlined.
3. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
The requirements of the ASTM Specifications not covered by the
substitute specifications are noted in the Tables, with footnotes
given on Section 4.
4. TABLE
Substitute materials are shown in the following Tables 1 to 9.
