COMMUNITY
The Pacific Grove Unified School District is located on the northwest end of the
scenic Monterey Peninsula. The natural beauty of the area has attracted profession-
al and business people from all over the world. These people have had a profound
effect on the school district's curricular offerings because of the high value they
place on quality education. The proximity of Fort Ord and other military installa-
tions contributes to a transitory school population which is diverse in terms of
educational, cultural and geographic backgrounds. The area is also rich in edu-
cational environment, especially in the arts and related activities.
THE SCHOOL
The Pacific Grove High School is a four year high school with an enrollment of
1185 students. It is housed on a 32 acre campus constructed over a period of 15
years. The buildings reflect some of the “newer concepts” in school planning in
the mid-sixties as well as older buildings of the more traditional “egg crate” era.
The library, established before the emphasis on multi-media materials, was in-
tended to be both functional and to have an esthetically pleasing atmosphere.
Special features of the school include the following programs of instruction:
« An Independent Studies Program enabling a group of 120 students to plan
and pursue a curriculum of the learner's special interest or in depth study.
+ Social Studies “co-op” teaching of mini-courses.
¢ Individualized foreign language programs.
e Individualized English instruction by student contracts.
FUNDING
The ESEA, Title II, Phase Il grant to the high school library during the 1970-71
fiscal year in the amount of $68,722, is the second grant received in the Pacific
Grove Unified School District. The Junior High School Media Center was funded
in the 1968-69 fiscal year, thus providing a continuous model library program for
all Pacific Grove students, grades 7 through 12.
Audio visual equipment was purchased by the Pacific Grove Unified School
District with matching funds through National Defense Education Act, Title III.
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
We are proud of the impact the library media center has had on the total education-
al program of our school. The shift in responsibility for learning from the teacher
to the student requires a variety of resources in all media. These materials we now
have through an ESEA Title II, Phase I! federal grant. We would be happy to have
you schedule an appointment to visit the Clarence A. Higgins Library.
