Kinder/1st Grade Sample Lesson Plan

Concepts: Body movement, steady beat, melodic contour, solo singing
Objectives: Students will engage in a body movement activity by dancing to the video Move It.
Students will practice melodic contour by singing to a slide whistle, different shapes drawn on
the board and by singing the song See Saw. Students will engage in musical play and singing by
playing the game Lucy Lockett. Students will practice steady beat by playing on rhythm sticks to
the song Johny Works With One Hammer. Finally students will engage in a listening activity as I
read them the book This Old Man Came Rolling Home.
State Standard(s): TEKS
Foundations: music literacy. The student describes and analyzes musical sound.
Creative expression: The student performs a varied repertoire of developmentally appropriate
music in informal or formal settings.
Materials: Computer, slide whistle, rhythm sticks, soprano/alto glockenspiel, soprano/alto/bass
xylophone, alto/bass metallophone, bass bars, childrens voices.
Grade/Age Level: Kinder/1st Grade
Procedures
1. Move It Video (5 minutes)
***TRANSITION****
Play on slide whistle and have students imitate the sound.
2. Echo Singing/Melodic Contour (10 minutes)
-Students will move their hand to the slide whistle.
-Identify the term Melodic Contour
-Draw new melodic contour on the board
-Have students use the wand to create their own melodic contour [3 people]
3. See Saw Song/Game (5 minutes)
-Sing the Song See saw
-Sing the song See saw while touching shoulders and hips
-See Saw Game: As I come down, the class stands up, as I stand up, the class squats
down
-Divide the class in half so one half starts standing and the other squatting
-Make the movements like a see saw.

Please sing See Saw to a circle please.
4. Lucy Lockett Game (10 minutes)
-Sing Lucy Lockett
-Sing Lucy Lockett while touching shoulders, head and hips.
-Ask: Where do we place our hands for the highest note? Where do we place our hands
for the lowest note?
-Sing Lucy Lockett again while touching shoulders, head and hips for melodic contour.
-One person is chosen to march around the circle with a wallet. That student drops the
wallet behind another student and he/she must chase them around the circle until they are
back in the original spot.
*Play the game 3-4 times*
*****TRANSITION****
Please keep a beat and sing Johny Works with One Hammer. When you receive your rhythm
stick keep it in front of you without touching it. If you pick up your rhythm stick it will be
taken away. (Pass out rhythm sticks as they sing the song.)
5. Steady Beat with Rhythm Sticks (7 minutes)
-Students will sing the song Johny Works with One Hammer while banging their rhythm
stick on the floor to the steady beat.
*Have an inflatable hammer and pick two students to bang the ground with it as they lead
us into a steady beat for the song.*
6. Loby Loo Game (8 minutes)
-Students march to 16 beats clockwise Here we go Looby Loo, Here we Go Looby La,
Here we go Looby Loo, All on a Saturday Night.
- You put your one hand in, and you take your one hand out, you shake it a little a little a
little and turn yourself around.
-Then students march counter clockwise 16 beats.
-You put your one foot in, and you take your one foot out, you shake it a little a little a
little and turn yourself around.
-Students march clockwise 16 beats.
-You put your whole self in, and you take your whole self out, you shake it a little a little
a little and turn yourself around.
*Have volunteers to give ideas of what else they can put inside and take out.*

7. Doggie, Doggie Game (5 minutes)


-Students sit in a circle.

-Sing the song and have students pat their shoulders, head and hips for the melodic
contour.
-One student sits in the center with his/her eyes closed.
-As the class sings the song, the teacher gives the bone to a student.
-The student in the center sings Who stole my bone? with eyes still covered.
-The student with the bone sings I stole the bone.
-The student in the center will guess who sang/stole the bone.
-If guessed correctly the person in the center stays in the center. If guessed incorrectly,
the person in the center and the person with the bone switch places.
*Play 3 times*
****TRANSITION***
Please Sing Doggie Doggie to your sitting spots.
8. Reading Time: This Old Man Came Rolling Home (5 minutes)
-As I read the book have students show me the number of times The Old Man Played
For example: He played two Students show two fingers.
-Have the students pat wherever the story says
For example: he played knick-knack on my shoe Have the students pat their shoes.
-Students will show me with their hands how the man came rolling home.
