Guide
Teacher Candidate:Abigail Milam
Date:April 27, 2016
Grade and Topic:2nd grade Science-Water Cycle
Length of Lesson:50 minutes
Mentor Teacher: Marla Phillips
School:University of Memphis IDT 3600
UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:
This unit is about the water cycle. At the end of this unit the students should be able to recognize the
water cycle and know all the parts.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this lesson is for students to have a good understanding of the water cycle and all the
steps and processes of it.
The students are expected to fill out a handout and to also make a voice recording about the water cycle.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
The State Board of Education (SBE) has the authority to adopt academic standards for each subject area
in grades K-12. Select the course title/ grade level to view a description of the course and the standards
adopted by the SBE. - See more at: http://www.tn.gov/education/article/sciencestandards#sthash.BG1oteUf.dpuf
ISTE: 3. Research and information fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use
information
plan strategies to guide inquiry
Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information
form a variety of sources and media
Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the
appropriateness to specific tasks
Process data and report results
MATERIALS:
Computer
Handout
Colored pencils
Pen/pencil

The students will use the computer to make a voice recording where they describe the steps of the water
cycle. They will then send in the voice recording to the teacher.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
By the end of this lesson students should have a good sense of what the water cycle is.
Precipitation, evaporation, condensation, collection
This is the beginning of a whole new segment.
After this lesson I will talk about other kinds of cycles like the life cycle so they can get a good sense of
how these things all work together.
Students who are accelerated learners will also be assigned a short paragraph assignment where they
write about the water cycle. Learners who are slower will have a handout that has helpful explanations
or the definitions of the words and a word bank.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction: To start this lesson I will show the students this fun and interactive video about the
water cycle so that they will become interested in this subject.

Procedures:
First step: I will ask the students to give me a brief summary of what they learned from the video and I
will ask if anyone can provide me with a definition of precipitation, evaporation, condensation, and
collection. Depending on the answers the students give I will then go over these four parts of the cycle
again to give them some repetition. (10-15 minutes)
Second step: Then I will give the students a handout where they will write out the four parts of the water
cycle and give a brief definition of each part. At the bottom of the handout they will draw a picture of
the water cycle with their colored pencils and will label each part. (15 minutes)
Final step: After they have finished their handout they will make a voice recording using audioboom.
Their voice recording while be the students giving a brief summary of what they have learned about the
water cycle that day. (10 minutes)
If there are not enough computers for the students to have then half the students will do the handout first
and the other half will do the voice recording first and then they will switch.
Closure: To end this lesson I will ask the students to share what they thought was the most interesting
part of the water cycle with a partner and ask them to send in their voice recordings via e-mail and turn
in their handouts for grading.

SAMPLE HANDOUT
What are the four parts of the water cycle?
1. Precipitation
2. Evaporation
3. Condensation
4. Collection

Give a brief description of each part of the water cycle:

1. Precipitation: Happens when enough water has condensed in the form of clouds that the air cannot hold
anymore.
2. Evaporation: Happens when the sun heats up the Earths bodies of water and creates vapor.
3. Condensation: Happens when the vapor in the air gets cold and changes back to liquid, forming clouds
4. Collection: happens when water from clouds enters the bodies of water
