1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)
The fantasies in my field are that every student will learn at the same speed and reach the same level of success.
Unfortunately being a teacher to young students, you often find yourself modifying curriculum to fit each child
and meeting them at their point of need. Every childs growth rate is different during their academic years.
2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
(educational level and requirements)
My current education level is a bachelors, after the summer. I am not required any further training, but I will be
obtaining my masters degree.
3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
(day-to-day activities)
I arrive at school daily. I greet children for approximately for the first hour of my day. At roughly 9 a.m. I begin to
carry out a detailed curriculum over the course of the next 3 hours. My students go to lunch, as I go on break. Our
end of the day activities include, art, recess, and pick up.
4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?
(job security)
I am secure in my position, but I am currently seeking to teach at a more challenging level. My ultimate goal in
my career is to be a counselor on the high school level or college.
5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?
(salary)
Depending on the district a first year teacher will make approximately 50,000+. This variable came fluctuate,
depending on experience, extra stipends, and private vs. public.
9. How do you handle family and personal life with the job life?
Thats the great thing about teaching. My holidays and summer are off, so I can spend that time with family and
friends. Very little of my work goes home with me, and I am off at a decent hour.
10. What advice do you have for someone looking to go into the same area of work?
I would recommend that you major in education. It is a much easier route. Gain experience with all
opportunities given, and never give up!

1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)
One fantasy that I had about teaching is that I would be able to sit at my desk. This is far from reality. I believe
an effective teacher mostly stands during instruction and moves around the classroom to observe and converse
with students. I believe that good teachers are on their feet much more often than they are sitting at their desks.
2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
(educational level and requirements)
I currently hold a masters degree, however a bachelors degree is all that is required to become a teacher. The
Texas Education Agency does require professional development hours in order to maintain and renew a teaching
certification.
3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
(day-to-day activities)
A typical day includes arriving on campus approximately 30 minutes before the first bell rings, preparing any
copies or presentations, taking attendance, presenting materials and lessons, giving lectures, grading assignments
Revised Fall 2013
and posting grades in the grade book. The day might also include attending level, department or faculty meetings
and performing monitoring duties at assigned stations around campus.
4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?
(job security)
I feel very comfortable in my position. I do think that technology will impact the way teachers perform their
duties, but I believe there will always be (or at least for a long time to come) the need for educators.
5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?
(salary)
A teachers salary ranges from about $50,000 to about $70,000.
6. What potential for growth is there in your field?
(growth potential)
There are many opportunities to advance in the education field. Teachers may transition into counseling,
administration or curriculum and instruction just to name a few.
***Questions 7-10 will be created by the ISM student.
7. What made you begin working in the field youre in?
I have always enjoyed learning and I also love working with children, particularly young adults. Being a
secondary school teacher gives me the opportunity to do both!
9. How do you handle family and personal life with the job life?
Fortunately, teaching is a family friendly profession. The hours, the holiday and summer breaks and the
workload leave plenty of time to spend with family and friends. Teaching is also a highly respected profession
and garners lots of support from the community for teachers and their families.
10. What advice do you have for someone looking to go into the same area of work?
You absolutely must have a passion for education and kids! You must also be willing to spend lots of
time preparing (and improving) lessons, grading papers, and improving your craft through professional
development.
