Competency001

Theprincipalknowshowtoshapeacampusandculturebyfacilitatingthedevelopment,
articulation,implementationandstewardshiptowardstheschoolvisionsupportedbythe
schoolcommunity.
DuringmyinternshipIwasluckyenoughtoshadowandworkcloselywithmyprincipal
oneventsactactivitiesthathelpedtoshapeschoolculture.Parentinvolvementwas
lackingbeforethisyear,butthroughoutthemanyeventsthatwehostedweslowlysaw
involvementstarttoincrease.Perhapsthebiggestevent,withthemostparent
participationwasourCurriculumNight,whichwasoneofmyprojects.Involvingparents
isaveryimportantaspectofstudentsuccess,andIlearnedalotaboutitthroughoutthis
internship.

Competency002
Theprincipalknowshowtocommunicateandcollaboratewithallmembersoftheschool
community,respondtodiverseinterestsandneeds,andmobilizeresourcestopromote
studentsuccess.
DuringmyinternshipIservedasteamleaderandCampusImprovementTeammember.
Thisallowedmetocollaboratewithteachers,parents,andadministratorsregarding
importantschoolmatters.Wecoordinatedanintensiveinterventionprogramgeared
towardthefinaleightweeksbeforetheSTAARtest,whichrequiredworkingcloselywith
administrationandteachersalike.Iwasabletoattendvariousboardmeetingsand
trainingsregardingstudentsuccess,andwastrulyabletoseefirsthandwhattrulygoes
intoinsuringeverystudentssuccess.

Competency003
Theprincipalknowshowtoactwithintegrity,fairness,andinanethicalandlegal
manner.
IwasabletoattendmanyARDmeetings,andlearnedalotaboutspecialedandschool
lawaltogether.IattendedvariousARDmeetingswithadvocatespresent,andlearneda
lotaboutspecialeducationlaw.Furthermore,Iwasabletodealwithmanyoffice
referralsandbehaviorinterventions.ItwasveryimportantthatIactedlegallyand
ethicallyinthesesituations.Beingapartofthebehaviorteamgavemeinsightinthe
importanceofintegrityandfairness.Itisalwaysimportanttoactinanethicalwayfor
parentsandstudentssake.

Competency004:
Theprincipalknowshowtofacilitatethedesignandimplementationofcurriculaand
strategicplansthatenhanceteachingandlearning;ensurealignmentofcurriculum,
instruction,resources,andassessment;andpromotetheuseofvariedassessmentsto
measurestudentperformance.

Asthespecialeducationteamleader,Iamconstantlyensuringtheuseofvaried
assessmentandstrategicplanstomeettheneedsofalllearners.Thefaceofeducationis
changing,anditisimportantthatwedeliverinstructionthatcanreachallthestudentsthat
wehaveinourclass.Ihavemetwithvariousteacherstohelpthembetterdifferentiate
theircurriculum,andreachalloftheirstudents.IhavealsoservedontheRegionIV
districtassistivetechnologyteamtoensurethatallstudentshaveanauthenticmeansof
communication,andcanbetteraccessthecurriculum.
Competency005:
Theprincipalknowshowtoadvocate,nurture,andsustainaninstructionalprogramand
acampusculturethatareconducivetostudentlearningandstaffprofessionalgrowth.
WhileshadowingmymentorIhavebeenallowedtoconductwalkthroughandoffer
suggestionstonewteachers.Ihavebeenabletotakepartinthementoringprogramfor
newteachersandhavebeenabletosupportthemontheirjourneythroughtheirfirstyear.
IthasbeenhelpfulforboththemandItolearnfromoneanotherandtowitnesstheir
growthduringtheirfirstyear.
Competency006:
Theprincipalknowshowtoimplementastaffevaluationanddevelopmentsystemto
improvetheperformanceofallstaffmembers,selectandimplementappropriatemodels
forsupervisionandstaffdevelopment,andapplythelegalrequirementsforpersonnel
management.
Iwasabletoconductapractice45minuteobservationwithateacheronmyteam.Ialso
conductedapreandpostobservationconference.WehadimportantdialogueIwasable
toofferhermeaningfulfeedbackinawaythatdidnotcomeoffasharsh.Itwas
interestingtoconducttheseconferencesandgivecriticalfeedbackinameaningfulway.I
wasalsoabletoassistinplanningfortheupcomingstaffdevelopmentsduringthe
summerwithmyprincipal.SheandIdiscussedourschoolneedsassessmentandwere
abletotakeintoaccountwhattrainingswethoughtwouldbemostbeneficial.
Competency007:
Theprincipalknowshowtoapplyorganizational,decisionmaking,andproblemsolving
skillstoensureaneffectivelearningenvironment.
Iwasabletoserveasspecialeducationteamleaderforthepasttwoyearsandoverseea
teamof14members,includingteachers,paraprofessionals,speechandlanguage
pathologistsanddiagnosticians.Iwasalsoelectedtoserveatwoyeartermonthe
CampusImprovementTeamwhichrequiredmetovoteonmanydecisionsregarding
budgets,staffdevelopments,andwaystoimproveourschool.

Competency008:
Theprincipalknowshowtoapplyprinciplesofeffectiveleadershipandmanagementin
relationtocampusbudgeting,personnel,resourceutilization,financialmanagement,
andtechnologyuse.
AsamemberoftheCampusImprovementTeamIwasabletovoteonmanythingsthat
werecomingoutofourTitle1budget.Ialsobecameveryfamiliarwiththe199budgets.
Thisprocessallowedmetoobserveandtakeanactivepartinhelpingtobetterallocate
fundstohelpourschoolcommunity.SimilarlyIoversawtheschoolspecialeducation
budget.Ibroughtideastomyteam,wevoted,andwemadepurchasesthatwouldbest
benefitourstudents.
Competency009:
Theprincipalknowshowtoapplyprinciplesofleadershipandmanagementtothe
campusphysicalplantandsupportsystemstoensureasafeandeffectivelearning
environment.
Ihavebeenabletotaketheleadonseveraleventsthisyeartohelpoverseestudentsafety.
Ihavealsoplannedmanyeffortstohelpandbeautifyourcampus.Overall,studentsafety
isfirstandforemost,andIhavehadmanyopportunitiestohelpensurethis.
