Do you think GMOs are having an effect on humans? GMO stands for Genetically
Modified Organisms. This mean that people put chemicals in foods to make them bigger so there
is more food from one crop. That is not the only way GMOs are used though. There are many
different GMOs out there including some that give more nutrients. Some people think it is a
good 5 and we should keep doing it, while others feel it is dangerous and it should be illegal in
the United States. It has come apparent that genetically engineered foods pose a high health risk
to humans, there are many methods of genetic engineering, along with there is a specific process
of protein synthesis from gene to protein through which they are developed.
To begin, from gene to protein there is a long process of protein synthesis. There are four
bases to DNA. Those bases are called adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine. To start off, DNA
replication takes place in the nucleus. Inside the DNA strand, replication can start anywhere. So,
there is a template strand and complementary strand. In the middle of the two strands there is an
emzyme called helicase. The helicase splits the DNA into two parts like a zipper and makes the
DNA identical to the original strand. Then one of the template strands connects with a
complementary strand to replicate itself.
Next, farmers hate GMOs. Farmers feel that using GMOs harm humans and can even
cause mutations. One farmer said, Foods that contain GMOs have less nutrition than regular
foods that are grown in the fields. Another reason GMOs are bad is because they put a high risk
on many crops. It is believed that GMOs are not necessary to the life of the human body. Also,

farmers feel that their crops are going to stop selling due to GMOs. This causes farmers to go
against the use of GMOs.
To continue, Peru has already banned GMO foods in their country. According to
Stephanie Whiteside, Peru stopped allowing GMOs so it wouldnt mess with the diversity of
crops and all the crops can be organic. This just shows the danger that GMO foods have on a
particular person. After letting the people of Peru vote, the outcome was for GMOs to be band. A
decision to ban GMOs wouldnt just happen unless there were facts to back up how horrible they
really are.
Finally, to support that genetically engineered foods pose a high risk to human health
scientists did an experiment on rats. If you didnt know, humans and rats have a lot in common.
The experiment they conducted involved 30 rats and they feed 15 of them GMO foods, while the
others were fed 15 organic foods. After doing the test they saw that the rats they fed organic
foods lived a lot longer than the rats that ate genetically modified foods. The rats lived for more
than 20 more years. Furthermore, all most all rats that ate GMOs developed diseases. Four of the
rats eventually developed really horrible tumors and died.
Now, to tell about the good things GMOs bring. GMOs reduce the cost of food. One
reason GMOs reduce the cost of food is because when using GMOs the number of crops that can
be grown increases. In the last three years studies showed by using GMOs crops increase their
production by 22 percent. Another reason GMOs are good because they reduce pesticides. If we
didnt use GMOs we would have 37 percent more pesticides in our foods. Finally, humans dont
want to consume pesticides.

Next, farmers profits increase by 68 percent every year using GMOs. Even though some
farmers say they lose money due to GMOs Drake Bennett, a scientist is Nebraska, says
differently. Drake says that farmers benefit from GMOs because they reduce pesticide
production, increase crop yield, and increase profit. There are many other people that agree with
Drake as well.
Although there are two sides to the issue, I strongly agree that we shouldn't use GMOs.
After doing research and finding out those rats were dying earlier eating GMOs I feel it will do
the same to us humans. Including, a country, Peru, has ban all GMOs. That is a red flag that
GMOs probably isn't the best thing America is doing. Furthermore, it isn't fair to the farmers that
are going their crops and trying to make profit. From all the hard work farmers put into their
fields we should be eating their healthy crops. In conclusion, we have to put an end to the use of
genetically modified organisms.
