GMO's Are "A Okay"

By: Jacob Scalf

In the world today there has been much controversy over the use of genetically
modified organisms being used in our societies food. Today our world is very
agriculturally centered. Over 60 countries today have banned or made restriction to
the selling and producing of gmo's (#1 website). These gmo's are used to help
plants grow in certain conditions. Many citizens are concerned that gmo's are a fault
in today's economy. We should still modify these organisms in our food because
gmo's can reduce the pesticide count in food, and they are good for our changing
climate and population growth.

The first reason why genetically modified organisms are good is because they help
reduce a foods pesticide count. In 1996 the modified crops were first introduced in
the market to the market (Grant np). These in today's society over 80% of
genetically modified organisms in the world are made for herbicide intolerance (Non
Gmo Project np). A variety of crops are known to resist herbicides, but the most
common is corn. Now people are trying to eat healthier so we eat a lot of fruits and
vegetables. Today corn is known to also resist weed killers as well as herbicides
(Grant np). Having herbicide resistant crops will make our food safer.

In today's world we have a changing population and a climate that is rapidly

changing, but with gmo's we can have foods that are safe to eat. Foods containing
gmo's are now adapting to our changes in our world. These climate changes are
attracting bugs when it's damp or hot outside, but that's why we have herbicides to
kill them off. The one bad thing about herbicides is they contaminate our food. Now
due to gmo's that can reduce the count in food our society we can eat safer. As our
population changes we can modify food to grow faster and grow in different
condition because of modified crops.

Genetic engineering is the process of changing a material by adding a new function

or substance. This is relevant to genetically modified organisms because genetic
engineering a regular organism makes it a genetically modified organism. One
process of genetic engineering would be to insert a gene that makes insulin in a
bacterial cell. First you would need to get a copy of the insulin gene. Next you have
to insert the gene into a vector. A vector is an organism that takes a gene from one
place to another place. Then endonucleases are used to cut the plasmid. Finally
once it has been cut the gene and the enzyme inside the plasmid mix and your
process is finished (Genetic Engineering np).

Another Process that is critical when talking about gmo's is protein synthesis.
Protein synthesis is the process in which cells build specific proteins. This is relevant
to gmo's because a gmo's alters the proteins the modified organism makes for itself.
The first process of protein synthesis is replication. Replication is when the DNA
unzips and copies itself onto RNA. Then during Transcription the RNA is sent to the
ribosome in the cytoplasm. Now Translation is happening which is when tRNA is
attracted to a codon, peptide bonds form, and mRNA make more amino acids
(Protein Synthesis np).

Other citizens are against using gmo's for various reasons. One risk factor is the
workers getting exposed to radiation when making these gmo's. If wearing the
proper clothing while being around radiation your flesh won't be exposed. The FDA
said genetically modified plants have to meet the same standards as all regular
(GMO Pros and Con np). So gmo's are not any less qualifying as regular foods. Some
citizens claim that gmo's are less nutritious, but they are incorrect. A study done by
Stanford University found no controversial evidence if organic food is more less
likely to have health risks nor be more nutritious (GMO Pros and Cons np ).

Due to today's agricultural need we should still use gmo's because they reduce the
pesticide count in the food we eat, and they adjust to our rapid climate and
population change. Protein synthesis is making specific proteins for a cell to survive.
Genetic engineering is making a regular organism into a gmo. People are eating
more fruits and vegetables that contain herbicide intolerance making that food
safer to eat. Genetically modified crops are adjusting to our climate changes. This is
happening right now these genetically modified foods are changing our world for
the good so protect them don't try to ban them.
