Practicum 3a

This math exam is about addition by tens, writing the sequencing of the numbers, counting the
pictures to select the number and counting by units and tens.

Before she distribute the papers she make a practice and give a summary about their previous
lessons that will come in the exam. She makes sure that they are listening by asking each
students individually a question about the lessons that they will be examined in. After that, she
started with handing out the papers for each student by moving around all of the class and this is
because they are grade 1, and they can confuse, because the exam is two papers and she didnt
stick it to make it easy for them to solve and answer the questions without flipping the papers
and after they finished the exam she start sticking the papers together. She asked them to keep
the paper in front of them and not open it until that all of the students take an exam paper. Then,
she asked them to focus with her, and started with writing their name and section. After that, she
used a device to show the paper in front of all of the class and she started explaining the
questions. She started analyzing all of the questions to make it clear for them. In addition, this
strategy is useful because these students need effort to understand the concept of the lesson. The
teacher explained the main questions and how that they should answer and solve the math
problems. I think that these are grade 1 and every teacher should apply this strategy because that
this exam examine their math skills not their language or their Arabic language.

During the exam and while that the students answer the questions, she moved around the whole
class to check if anyone need help. She helped them by explaining the way that they should
follow. Even that she explained the questions at the beginning of the exam. But they are grade 1
and they need more effort to arrive the information for them. If she was moving and one student

raised her hand to ask questions, she received by saying; wait, I will come and answer your
questions. She answered the questions in order, the first one that raise will receive the answer
faster than the next one and this is fair as I think. If all of the students face problems in solving
the same question, she explained it gain at the board and circulate the question in front of all the
students. I noticed that the students asked about the meaning of the problems, especially if the
way that the main question is written in complex language and in deep Arabic not simple way.
The students take enough help while they are answering the exam questions, and they told how
to proceed and they reactive a lot of help from the teacher. My MST was trust her students and
she knew that they will not cheat because she was applying individually work during the
previous weeks while they were setting in groups, and they were following a selectable strategy.

In addition, when the students finished early, the teacher asked them to memorize their answers
and submit the papers, then, she started marking these papers during the class. She used this
method to encourage the students to focus more, especially If these students got full marks.
Form my opinion, this strategy can have negative side, which is that some students can confused
while they are trying to solve the question because they want to submit the papers such as their
friends, especially that they are in grade 1 or 2 and they get jealous from their colleagues. They
will try to finish quickly without concentrating because that these students can think that who
finish early, will get full mark and this can affect negatively in their marks.

After the assessment finished or after the class finished, the teacher asked the students to start
collecting the papers without remaining before time is up. She selects each time different student,
that will be responsible about collecting her group papers. The teacher selects a file for each

group to keep the papers in an organized way and to prevent getting confused while she marking
papers. In addition, what I noticed that if any student need more time, she dont give her a
chance to finish the paper and she collect it at the same time. I think that some students need
more time specially, that in this exam she examine the students from the special need class, and
they need more time because they have different ability of the students who dont have special
need categories.

Reflection: Do you think her actions and responses fit with the type of
assessment the students were working on?

From my opinion, my MST can select the suitable strategy that can control her class in a good
way, especially during the exam time. I liked when she began the exam by asking them to
remember and write their names and the section of the class. This way clarified from the
beginning that she cares about the students and have the ability to differentiate between levels
because not all students will remember to write their names.

From my point of view, I think that when my MST analyzed and explained the questions for the
students before that they start, she tried to give them a chance to prevent making mistakes. I
think that the teacher should read the questions and translate it into simple language because the
exam examine their math skills not their language. And this can give the students good chance
to gain a high marks in the exam because they will understand the concept, what the questions
need and how they should answer it.

From my opinion, I liked the way when she was moving around the class to check if anyone
need help. From my mentoring to this class from the first day that I started my teaching practice,
I noticed that not all students are brave or can ask questions, even in the daily classes, and this
way will give them easy solution to express their feelings and ask questions.

I also prefer the strategy when she answered questions in order even that she move around,
because the priority is for who raised their hands. I think that this teaches students how to be
responsible, respect the rules and being organized person.
