Toolkit Topic: My family!


Assessment Tittle: A more representative view of families !
Subject/Grade Level: Social Studies/First Grade !
Assessment Duration: 50 minutes, (previous collection of materials, putting together the book
after assessment). !

Essential Question: What is a family? How are families now different from the past? How are
families different based on where they live?

Objectives: !
The students will be able to identify the different parts of a family. !
The students will be able to identify the activities a family can do together.!
The students will be able to express their own unique family.!
The students will be able to identify why some sources might not be as good of a
representation of what family is.!
The students will be able to justify why this source, This is Family book they are creating,
is a good representation of what family is. !

understanding of the past, such as artifacts, documents, letters, diaries, maps, textbooks,
photos, paintings, architecture, oral presentations, graphs, and charts

The students will create their own This is Family book for the classroom. Each student
will have a page for their own family. The students need to include: !
One uniques thing about their family.!
One thing that changed their daily. (time or location) !
They need to describe what happened and how this changed their family.!
One activity they do as a family.!
The individuals in the family.!
Two photos.!
One photo of their family.!

If the students do not want to bring in a picture they can draw a picture of !

If the students do not want to bring in a picture or draw one, they may use

The students will also make a page for each family they interviewed over Skype in a
previous lesson. The students will work on this one page in the groups they were in for the
interview process. The students need to include: !
One different thing about this family from their families.!
Where the family is from.!
One activity they do as a family that is affected by where they are from or their culture.!
The individuals in the family!
One picture of the family.!
The picture will be provided my the teacher. !

Opening: !

The students will meet in the carpet area for a discussion. The students will be told they
will be making the book today. The teacher will show the students the craft area with all the
crafts, stickers, glue sticks, markers, and others they can use for their book page. !

Discussion: !

Ask the students:!
What were the problems in some of the books we read when it comes to describing
what a family is?!
What were some things you would like to add to the descriptions we saw?!
Do you think it will be helpful to add these things?!
What do you think this would add to the understanding of what a family looks like?!

Assessment Lesson:!

The students will be given one sheet of scrap book paper to make their book page on.
The students will also be provided with glue, markers, stickers and other materials they might
need. The students will have the information about their families and the families they

interviewed from the interviews conducted in the privies lessons. The students will be instructed
to bring in the pictures they need for their own book pages prior to this lesson. !

Closure: !

The students will hand in their book pages. The teacher will let the students know that
she will bind the pages together and make a cover page for the book and this will be their
classroom book. The teacher will inform the students that there will be a kindergarten class
coming into their classroom in one week and they will get the chance to read their book tot hem
and share it with them. !

Assessment: !

The students will be assessed in their discussion about the books they have read about
family and how the books are lacking in some ways. !

Students will be asked to fill out an in class check sheet during our discussion with their

The students will also be assed on their book pages by the following rubric that will be
available to them. The students will get two separate grades, one for their page and one for the
collaborative page they do in their group. !
