Lesson Plan College of Saint Benedict/Saint Johns University

Title of Lesson: Headbandz Geometry

Grade Level: Kindergarten
Process Standard(s): Geometry
NCTM or Minnesota Academic
Standards:
K.3.1.1 - Recognize basic two- and
three-dimensional shapes such as
squares, circles, triangles, rectangles,
trapezoids, hexagons, cubes, cones,
cylinders and spheres.

Objectives:
What will the students know or
be able to do?
1. Students will be able to
recognize the characteristics of
a square, rectangle, triangle
and circle.

Rationale:
Students will need to use shapes while learning all math and throughout
their lives. Shapes are all around us in the world and its important for
students to be able to recognize shapes.
Materials/Preparation Needed:
o Headbands
o Cards with colorful shapes
o Masking tape or blue painters tape
o Large shapes on board
List and define:
1. discipline specific language:
Square: shape with 4 equal sides
Circle: shape with all round edges
Rectangle: shape with 2 sets of equal sides
Triangle: shape with 3 sides
2. academic language:
Anticipatory Set:
8 minutes
I will start by reviewing shapes. I will have large shapes on the board that are
different colors. I will hold one shape up at a time and have the students tell
me what the shape is. The shapes will be a square, triangle, rectangle and
circle. I will go over each shape multiple times, being sure to let every
student answer a question at least once. I will ask questions like, What does
it mean for a shape to be a square?, while I am holding the square shape
up. I am looking for the answer, A square has 4 equal sides.

Procedure:
15 minutes [as transitions, every 5 minutes, I will clap 3 times and
the students will stand up and create their favorite shapes with
their bodies]
1. After reviewing shapes, I will split the students into groups of 3-4 by
drawing sticks.
2. Groups will spread out around the room.
3. In the groups, each student will have a head band that can hold a
card, such as in the game Headbandz.
4. Each group will have a set of cards with a rectangle, square, circle or
triangle on it. There will be multiple of each shape, using different
colors for each one. This helps students practice their colors and uses
color recognition when practicing shapes.
5. Every student will have a shape card on their headband so they
cannot see it. Each student will take turns getting clues from their
group members about what shape is on their head. The student will
then try to guess what shape they have.
6. This will continue for 15 minutes with a transition twice, every 5
minutes. After each transition, students will mix up their groups.
10 minutes
7. After this, students will all get in a big circle in the class. Each student
will have a long piece of masking tape.
8. With the masking tape, the students will create the shape I say on the
ground. I will review a rectangle, triangle, circle and square.
Assessment of Learning:
Students will be assessed orally throughout the lesson using this rubric
below.
Closure:
As a closure, students will lay on the ground and create whatever shape I
shout out with their bodies. I will review a rectangle, square, circle and
triangle.
Assignment:
N/A

Accommodations:
Students will be supported by their group members and me walking around
helping them. This lesson is a lot of review of these shapes so they can
practice more and wont be afraid to ask questions. Advanced students will
be able to be creative with the tape on the ground by making more
complicated triangles or rectangles. We use group work, games, individual
work and color recognition to help all learners.
Reflection
Rubric

1: Developing
Students will be
able to recognize
the characteristics
of 1 of the shapes
we covered; a
square, rectangle,
triangle or circle.

2: Beginning
Students will be
able to recognize
the characteristics
of 2-3 shapes of the
4 shapes we
covered; a square,
rectangle, triangle
or circle.

3: Proficient
Students will be
able to recognize
the characteristics
of a square,
rectangle, triangle
and circle.

4: Exceeds
Students will be
able to recognize
the characteristics
of a square,
rectangle, triangle
and circle while
creating other
shapes on their
own.
