Observation Date: 3/14/2016

Observation Time: 1:30 -2:30 pm

Teacher Observed: Mr. Sifuentes

Subject/Grade Level: ELA-8D

School Observed: HIS-El Paso

Observer: Yakup Ozcelik

1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if known, for
example, TEKS 111.4. Grade 2.b.) 8.10(A) and 8.10(B)
Summarize the main ideas, supporting details, and relationships among in text succinctly in ways that
maintain meaning and logical order.

2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?

When students were entered the classroom, they grabbed a reading book and read it 10 min. He gave homework
the end of the class.

3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?
I have seen that only textbook is used during all time.

4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? ( lecture, inquiry, discovery learning,
discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning, integration of technology, socrative
questioning, etc)
He used mainly lecturing which includes simple in-text question and answer, and students read the text from the
textbook.

5-How did the teacher assess learning? (informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, open-ended, quiz,
feedback etc) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods
He generally asked orally and to get answers by the same way. I could not see more technique to observe.

6- What can you say about the teachers philosophy/beliefs and style? (Traditional/progressive, behaviorist,
student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc)
The teacher`s philosophy mainly is seen as traditional and mainly teacher centered.

7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management techniques used?
He managed the class very well but not seen a solid classroom management procedure applied. Some of the
students walked around and teacher did not warn to him. They talked to each other in the beginning of the class
but I have not seen any protective behavior system. Not big issue happened.

8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when off-task. What do
they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct them or get them back on
task?
Students had ordinary behavior. They talked to each other, sometimes laughed, exchanged to each other. I
believe that it depends on the not set up a classroom procedures and applied thorough the year.

9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)
His communication with the students is good. No any major disrespectfulness was observed. He mainly used
verbal communication.
10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background, diversity, attitude,
motivation, interaction, participation, etc)
The class I visited and observed has mainly Hispanic background students. I have seen a few Afro-American
and a few white students. Their academic achievement not looks like perfect but not too bad too.
11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is ineffective in keeping
students engaged?
He used frequently `cool`, `excellent`, `good job` which are encouraged to students to learn and get a chance to
read the passage. I expected from this teacher more ways to teach and encourage them to the topic.

12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your classroom?
Questioning and answering was used effectively.

13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would like to apply
in your classroom?
I see that the teacher did not use exceptional classroom management strategies. Such as when students talked to
each other he warned regularly with oral warning. It seems that not perfectly set up the classroom management
procedures.
