Gurney Flap.

A gurney flap is a micro trailing edge device, it is a simply flat plate attached
perpendicularly to the lower (pressure) surface of an airfoil or wing trailing edge. It is
simple as shown in the next figure:

The effect of this device in two-dimensional airfoils and three-dimensional wings is


a lift increment (CL) and the increase on the maximum lift coefficient. Typical applications
are on downforce wings of ricing automobiles, in the cove of multi-element airfoils and on
wind turbine blades.
The mentioned effect can be observed in the next graphic from the experiment of
Cavanaugh, Robertson and Manson (2007) AIAA, where is clearly appreciated the
variation in CLmx and reduction of angle of attack where lift coefficient equals zero.
