This premise of this study was the correlation of executive functioning with narrative
writing in fourth graders. The goal was to determine the extent of the development of executive
functioning and what aspects of narrative writing contributed. Also, different levels of narrative
writing were examined. 102 Dutch students examined through a narrative picture-elicitation task.
Transcription skills and languages were also analyzed through an assessment that incorporated a
large test-battery. The results of the experiment indicated both direct and indirect correlations
between executive functioning and narrative writing. Findings revealed that inhibition and
updating contribute directly to text length and indirectly through handwriting, syntactic
complexity, and story content. The study ultimately concluded that executive functioning
contributes to more success in complex narrative writing tasks.

This study was designed to analyze the application of abstract nouns and metacognitive
verbs in the narrative writing of children and adolescents. This was conducted by organizing
three groups of students ages 11, 14, and 17 and requiring them to writing an emotional
response to something that happened to them and/or a friend. An examination of these narrative
essays was conducted in an attempt to analyze the usage of abstract nouns and metacognitive
verbs. Also, syntax was analyzed for the use of naturalistic language and clausal density. The
results of this study included these patterns: age-related growth in narrative writing and accurate

This journal article describes how a qualitative research study was conducted to explore
the learning experiences and writing attributes of creative writers. The articles use the techniques
of influential philosophers to analyze written narrative of a particular participant. The se
philosophers include French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty, who focused his work around
concepts like perception, art, and politics, and American philosopher Eugene Gendlin who is
famous for his elaborate psychotherapeutic processes. The applications of these philosophers
strategies revealed several aspects in narrative writing, including: specific qualities related to
writing-encouragement, therapeutic healing through narrative writing, and physical awareness.
