Research Essay
I truly believe that having a healthy diet has always been my
goal. I enjoy cooking and trying new recipes while making sure all my
ingredients are good for my bodys development. I have always wanted
to be as healthy as I could possibly be. I generally knew that eating
right was good however; I didnt truly know or understand the
benefits of eating healthy nor did I the reason why it was
recommended in the first place.
There is a strong connection between this topic and my personal
experience regarding eating healthier. My sisters and I always used to
try different recipes in my mothers kitchen when we were younger.
Cooking on the weekends had always been like a family tradition for
us. I also enjoyed making smoothies and all types of cooking
adventures in general. I remember instinctively pursuing a healthy
lifestyle even when I was younger. The fact that I was no expert
certainly did not keep me from exploring the food network. I think this
is more than an assignment to me because it allowed me to link
knowledge to what is already a passion to me.

The following present the findings of my research, which I believe
would be beneficial to a large number of people. It is important for
people to be aware of the effects (positive or negative) that the foods
they eat have on the organism. The U.S nation is greatly affected
financially by the bad food choices of Americans that lead to different
chronic diseases. Research has shown that 75 percent of healthcare
funds is spent on people that suffer from Metabolic Syndrome (carb
loaded), which is a type of sickness generally triggered by the type of
foods we put into our system. I believe more people should be
conscious of this type of information because it is a serious issue that
most people dont talk about or simply choose to ignore. Health is
something of incalculable value that, in my opinion, should be
treasured. We only have one body that cant supernaturally be fixed
once it is out of action. Being more aware of the benefits of healthy
eating would help prevent illnesses, drop mortality rate as well as help
the government spend less money on treatment for chronically ill
patients.
Its been said that 80% of our health is influenced by what we
eat and the other 20% by physical activity (Skerrett 492-501). This
means that our diet plays a significant role in our well-being, since we
cannot count on exercise only to magically restore our body while
were not feeding it with the right type of nutrients. According to
experts people tend to eat more fast foods now because it is cheaper

and quicker, without realizing that both the time and money saved by
eating poor quality foods are recuperated at the doctor. Hence the
famous quote Lathe Poland Pay the farmer now or pay the doctor
later. This is why we should adopt a healthier lifestyle, because by
doing so we can enjoy life at its fullest and use our bodies at their full
potential from getting the right types of nutrients. Moreover, a healthy
diet

According to Patrick Skerrett, the average person should
incorporate a minimum of five servings of fruit per day in his or her
diet. However, only one person in four lives according to this
recommendation in the U.S. Also, fruits and vegetables contain
nutrients that have been proven to prevent cardiovascular diseases
and fight certain cancer cells (Skerrett). This information directly
relates to my inquiry, because it states the advantages of having a well
balanced diet with clarity.
The most significant answer to my inquiry question was finding
out that everything that we put into our body system has an impact on
our health whether it is good or bad. I felt like the documentary Carb
Loaded was able to easily wrap things up for me and help me
understand the true benefits of healthy eating as well as the very
unpleasant consequences of having an unhealthy diet. This is because
they provided enough evidence such as how the food portion per

person has increased over the years. Another thing that has
contributed to the populations unhealthy routine, according to the
documentary, is technology. People spend more time in front of TVs
and computers instead of going for a walk in the park for example. It
also shows that dishwashers and microwave ovens have led us into
doing less physical activity and has increased risks of getting sick.
I do understand now that having a healthy lifestyle altogether is
an investment toward sustainable good shape. We can either chose to
build our health by eating right and exercising for example, or destroy
it by doing just the opposite. Either way, our good shape lies in our
hands. When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle we have the final
word whether we choose to believe this truth or not.
Vitamins are also important for our bodies; therefore taking
a certain amount of different types of vitamins throughout our diets
should be beneficial for our body. However, if vitamins requirements
are not met by our diets, supplements are also a good option when a
person wants to get all the advantages of vitamins without any extra
fat or calories from food (Skerrett). I am still trying to figure out
whether I should add supplements to my diet, because I know that I
dont get a lot of vitamin D from dairy products for example. I want to
make sure I make the right decisions. I still do not understand this
concept fully. I have also learned that all childbearing age women are
recommended to take a certain amount of folic acid daily to help

prevent birth of babies with neural tube defect (Talbot 201). I would
certainly like to inform myself more on this particular topic in order to
reach my health goals.
I am both amazed and proud of myself for picking this topic
because it is so intriguingly personal to me, but I am also glad that I
followed through and learned a lot thanks to this research. I am
confident that the discoveries I made will help me improve myself as
well as my lifestyle. My view of food has greatly been affected by the
knowledge I gained so far, and I am hoping to learn to discipline myself
well enough to be able to enjoy all the benefits of a healthier diet.
