    Illiteracy, commonly known as the inability to read or write, can be caused by ignorance. An increase in the availability of books around the home and the emphasis placed on the importance of reading, will decrease the illliteracy among the youth of America. One in four children will grow up without learning how to read, and there is only a slightly smaller gap regarding adults. It is the responsibility of not only the parents, but the teens as well to make it a more popular pastime.

    Illiteracy,commonlyknownastheinabilitytoreadorwrite,canbecausedbyignorance.
    Whilemanyothersmaysaythatilliteracyiscausedbylearningdisabilitiesorsimplythat
    povertyisresponsiblefortheinabilityofthechildrentolearntoread,thetruecause,maylie
    withinthechildrensownactions.Anincreaseintheavailabilityofbooksaroundthehomeand
    theemphasisplacedontheimportanceofreading,willdecreasetheilliteracyamongtheyouthof
    America.Illiteracyhasalwaysbeenaroundandwillcontinueunlessignoranceisstopped.
    Whilstilliteracyinpartdoeshavetodowithwhatisknownastheintergenerational
    transmissionofilliteracy,(CausesofIlliteracy)thefactthatparentswithlittleschoolingand
    wholiveinpovertyschildrenwilllikelycontinuethatpattern,thatisnottheonlyfactor.
    Althoughthisisavalidreason,itisevenmorespecificallyrootedinthefactthattheseparentsdo
    notteachtheirchildrentheimportanceofreading.Sincethesechildren'sparentshaveahigh
    illiteracyrate,theymorethanlikelydonotownavarietyofbooksorreadtotheirchildrenas
    oftenastheyshould.Thislackofavailablebooksandreadingmateriallimitstheexposurea
    childgetsathomeandprovideslittlevaluetobooksandreadingthroughoutthefamily.Statistics
    showsthatoneinfourchildrenwillgrowupwithoutlearninghowtoread,(11FactsAbout)and

    thereisonlyaslightlysmallergapregardingadults.This,inturn,ledtothedecliningofreading
    amongteensandyoungadultsallacrossthecountry.Thedecline,however,cannotbeblamed
    solelyontheparentsoftheseteens.Itistheresponsibilityofnotonlytheparents,buttheteens
    aswelltomakeitamorepopularpastimeoramorehighlyregardedone.Only,53%of4th
    gradersadmittedtoreadingrecreationallyalmosteveryday,whileonly20%of8thgraders
    couldsaythesame,(11FactsAbout)showingthesignificantdeclineintheactivityofreading
    amongteens.Astheageincreases,thetimespentreadingdecreases.Themostprominentdecline
    happenswithcollegeseniorswhereoneinthreereadnothingatallforpleasure(Readingand
    Literacy).Theimportanceofreadingshouldbestressedbyanyonewhohasaninfluenceonthese
    childrenslives.Theyoungertheageinwhichthisisimplemented,mayreducetheeffects
    illiteracyhasontheirlives.
    Besidesthemostobviouseffectsofbeingilliterateincludingnotbeingabletoreador
    writeeffectively,therearemoresignificantconsequencestonotlearningtoreadatan
    appropriateage.Ahugeimpactthatliteracyhasaneffectonistheabilitytoacquireajob.
    Illiterateteensandespeciallyintheiradultyears,are2to5timesmorelikelytobeunemployed
    becausethey,lackthenecessaryskillstomeetthecurrentmarketrequirements,(Causesof
    Illiteracy).Thisleavesthosewhoprobablyneedjobsthemost,likethoseinpoverty,willbeless

    likelytobeabletoqualifyforone,continuingthatintergenerationaltransmissioncycleof
    illiteracy.Anothereffectofbeingilliterateisthatthereisacorrelationbetweenilliteracyamong
    adolescentsandcrimerates.Over70%ofinmatescannotreadabovea4thgradelevelandof

    thoseinmates,nearly85%ofjuvenileswhofacedtrialinacourtsystemarefunctionally
    illiterate,(11FactsAbout).Ifadolescentswereexposedtomorebooksandtotheimportanceof
    reading,theywould,accordingtothesestudies,belesslikelytogetintroublewiththelaw.
    Illiteracy,causedbytheignoranceintheimportanceofreadingandthelackof
    availabilityofbooks,canbedecreasedsimplybyaddressingtheseissues.Whileparentsmaynot
    beasliterateastheyshouldbeduetotheirupbringingorpoverty,theyshouldgetoutofthat
    cycleandgivetheirchildrenaprivilegetheydidnothavethechanceofobtainingatayoungage.
    Illiteracycanonlyreallybechangedbythosewhounderstandwhatitislikepersonallyandwho
    wantabetterlifeforthosejuststartingout.
