What I learned about UDL?

There are many ways for information to be learned today. UDL
stands for Universal Design for Learning. It is a type of framework
that is used so all learning styles can understand what is being
taught. Some learning styles are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic.
Visual learners prefer to see the information while auditory learners
prefer to hear the information. There are learners who prefer to
learn the information by using interacting materials. There isnt a
right or wrong way to present information, because everyone learns
differently. It helps to present the information multiple ways, so
everyone can fully comprehend. UDL is commonly used in school
classrooms, but it can also be used in a business environment. For
example, if the supervisor is holding a meeting he or she can print
out a PowerPoint or notes on the major topics with some key notes,
along with communicating the information verbally. This will help all
the employees understand the information.
On the other hand, in a school setting, it is important for
information to be presented multiple ways. Teachers are given a
curriculum at the beginning of the year stating the subjects of study.
From that booklet, teachers need to create and plan how they are
going to teach students the curriculum. Teachers can use the
guidelines of UDL so the highest level of learning is reached. Those
guidelines are organized around three principles of UDL called
engagement, representation, and expression. Some key questions
under engagement that teacher should keep in mind when planning
a lesson are does the lesson provide options that can help all
learners control their own learning, does the lesson provide interest
and engage all learners and keep their motivation. In addition,
teachers want to make sure information is presented to learners so
that learners can reach higher levels of comprehension, and
perceive what needs to be learned. Therefore, self-express can be
used strategically.
Since all children learn differently, it is important for teachers to
be able to incorporate all types of learning in the classroom. For

example, if the curriculum stated students need to be able to

multiply within one hundred, then a lesson needs to be created. The
teacher can start off the lesson with an introduction such as
completing math problems regarding adding to each number. Then
the teacher will start teaching how to multiply, verbally. Then the
teacher will show a video on multiplication. After students have
heard and seen how to multiply, the teacher will complete practice
problems with them. Finally, the students will independently
complete a worksheet on multiplying numbers and this will allow
the teacher to assess the students comprehension.
