Twitter Chat Analysis
Within Education, teachers are discovering new ways to incorporate Social Science into a
daily curriculum. Throughout my experience in Social Science, I have been discovering the
importance and ways to incorporate Social Science into a daily curriculum. For an assignment, I
was required to participate in a Twitter chat; the professor asked students six questions. As a
class, each student delivered an answer and interacted with other classmates to understand the
importance of Social Science.
The first question was, Do students learn best in lectures? The whole class felt that
lectures are not always the best way to teach. We feel that students need kinesthetic and engaging
lessons to comprehend and remember information. The second question was, Can lectures be
engaging? Talk about one time you remember that a lecture was engaging. I responded about
how I was recently at an Autism Conference. I was engaged by taking notes, trying to understand
the speakers, and being interested in the lecture. The first presenter was Temple Grandin herself,
as an audience I had to keep up with her fast talking. The third question was, When was a time
you remember a Social Studies lesson as being engaging? Back in middle school, the Social
Studies teachers held a Renaissance Food Tasting day. Each student had to research a recipe or
type of food that was commonly found on a table during the renaissance. Students got dress up
and tasted food all class period. The teachers had each student explain the food they brought. The
fourth question was, What is the best way for students to have retention? The majority of the
class stated that students retention is higher when students teach each other and have hands on
activities. The fifth question was, In a student-centered classroom, what is the teachers role?
The majority of the class stated that walking around and asking leading questions is a major role
of the teacher. The sixth question was, Review the survey from week five, what do you find
interesting about the results? The class stated how pretty much the whole class saw contribution
to society as an important item within society, however, contribution to society was one of the
lowest items that the class does within society.
As educators, we need to remember how important each subject is to the education world.
After we understand the importance of teaching all subjects, we must know all different ways to
teach each subject. Each student has a special way of learning and remembering information.
Some students may be visual, verbal, hands-on, etc. As a teacher, we must be able to modify a
lesson on the spot to prompt all learning styles. By using student learning styles, we are able to
teach engaging and effective lessons.
