DOL Warm-up: Two sentences are projected

onto the smartboard. They have multiple
errors in spelling, grammar, and/or structure.
Each table is assigned a day when they are in
charge of going to the board and fixing the
errors. (While the class is doing this, the
teacher takes roll and hands back graded
assignments). The teacher then evaluates the
changes and the class discusses why the
changes were or were not necessary.

reasons to write.

Table Group:
Give each table a paragraph sort. These are
examples of paragraphs written for the writing
proficiency that have been cut into sentence
strips. Students should be able to find the
topic sentence, the concrete detail, and two
evidence sentences to support that detail.
There are three details with two supportive
sentences for each paragraph. They are to
put the paragraph together by following the
outline formula. Have each group present
their paragraph sort and see if the rest of the
class agrees with the order.
Students will put them under the ELMO to
show the order they have chosen. If the
students agree with the order they will remain
seated, if they do not agree they will stand.
The students who are standing will state why
they disagree with the order and what

changes they would make.
