General Semantics 47.4 (1990): 372-375.Academic Search Premier. Web. 17 Apr.
2016.
This article debates whether or not euphemism works in advertising.
Advertising is one of the most common sources of getting people to buy products.
It tends to emphasize products in ways we cannot recognize. This type of promo,
which uses euphemism, can confuse consumers and make them believe that they
need a certain product. I found this source by using the search engine on the
Oviatt Library on CSUNs page. I believe this is an appropriate page because a
Professor of Speech Communications with all the citations wrote it. This source
will be useful to my paper because it shows how euphemism is and can be used in
many different aspects. It relates to my topic because it shows how it can change
the way people take in these euphemisms in different activities.
LaPointe, Leonard L. "Euphemisms." Journal of Medical Speech - Language
Pathology 19.2 (2011): 1+. General OneFile. Web. 17 Apr. 2016.
This article discusses how euphemism is a useless verbiage for something
that can be said very bluntly. Most words are used in a secretive way that is
misunderstood by many people. Euphemism is used a lot in association with death
or sex symbols and it is used to fight back any harsh emotions that certain words
can leave. I found this source using the search engine on the CSUN Oviatt Library
page. I find this journal appropriate because it is written and published by a
professor with a PhD citing his references. This article will be useful to my essay

because it provides useful information on how euphemism is used in society and

how we try to interpret words with different meanings. This also connects to The
Giver because many words are used in the book such as released which in reality
it means killed.

McGlone, Mathew. "Communication Monographs." Contamination and Camouflage in
Euphemisms (2007): 261+. Web. 1 May 2016.
This journal explains how communication is represented with euphemisms
and how it has become so conventional. Also it states how euphemisms can be
camouflage like properties. I found this source using the Oviatt Library search
engine. I find this journal appropriate for my essay because it explains euphemism
is deep detail and the difference used for politeness or familiarity. Also it is
written and published by Matthew McGlone who has his Ph.D from Princeton
University. This article was useful to my essay because it shows both negative and
positive aspects of euphemism, which is helpful for my topic because I use both.
Also it dives into how it can relate to camouflaging in several ways.
"Misguided youth misconception raised by Indian political euphemism." Jul 15 2013.
Web. ProQuest. 1 May 2016.
This journal talks about euphemisms used in politics. It claims that using
words or phrases with different meaning causes less drama and reduces problems
in the country. I found this source using the Oviatte Library search engine. It was
an appropriate source because it was a peer reviewed academic article. This
journal was useful to my paper because I included political technology to be part

of how euphemisms are being used. This journal clearly stated how euphemisms
are used in the government and debates.
