Genre Analysis Matrix

Topic: The effect that global warming has on the Earths ecosystem.
Genre 1: picture of a Polar Bear standing on a small, drifting piece of ice.

The genre would be the Image.
Genre 2: An essay that answers questions about the effects of global
warming on the Earths Polar ice caps. The essay is titled Global Warming
puts the Arctic on Thin Ice and was found on nrdc.org. The genre would be
the Essay.

Question 1: The image genre was selected in class. The reason I selected the
essay was so that I would be able to effectively compare and contrast two
genres that deal with the same topic.

Question 2: The characteristics that make these genres differ from one
another are very clear. The image relies solely on the visual. The essay relies
on the strength of the written text.

Question 3: While the image of the lone Polar Bear drifting out to sea does
convey ethos and logos it does so in a subliminal manner thus lending itself
to most effectively convey pathos because of the sadness that emerges from
seeing a helpless animal. The essay most effectively conveys Ethos by
making it clear that we are responsible for this issue and by presenting the
reader with credible evidence that exponential change to our planets
ecosystem is occurring. The essay also communicates Logos effectively
because it presents the reader with the notion that our planet cannot sustain
the rate at which we are destroying it.
