    AboutThisPlace,thereisplentyofevidencesolidifyingtheclaimthatglobalizationdoesnot
    occurinasimplifiedlinearfashion.ThebookfollowsWainainaslifegrowingupinmodern
    Africa,andthecolorfulexperiencesonhisjourneytobecomeawriter.Throughoutthememoir,
    globalizationseepsthroughthepagesintheformofproducts,popculture,language,andperhaps
    mostidentifiably,theWorldCup.
    FromanEnglishspeaking,Taiwanmade,safe,importedunblemishedplastic...
    Americangrinningmouthorganharmonica,toblackChinamadebicycles,globalization
    makesitselfpresentfromthemanufacturingandtransportofgoods(Wainaina25,184).Other
    vehiclescausingglobalizationarepopcultureiconssuchasMichaelJacksonandJayZ.
    WhetheryoungKenyanswanttodancelikeMichaelJackson,orayoungartistwantstopainta
    portraitofJayZ,thepowerofpopularculturereachesacrosstheglobe(Wainaina35,187).
    Languageisanadditionalfacetofglobalizationthatenhancesthetermscomplexity.The
    starkestevidenceofthisrelationshipispresentinurbanKenya.Here,Englishsymbolizes
    authority,trajectory,[and]international[citizenship],whileKiswahiliisthelanguageofthe

    nationhood,andthemothertonguestakeonthepersonalityofcontentvillagerornostalgic
    urbanite(Wainaina125).UrbanKenyaisanexampleofhowglobalizationhascausedarich
    varianceoflanguagesutilizedfordifferentpurposes.Whenoneisworkingwithaforeign
    diplomattheymightspeakEnglish,andthenswitchtoKiswahiliwhentheygotoabarwiththeir
    friendsafterwork.
    Themostblatant,yetsplendidevidenceofglobalizationoccurswhenWainainadescribes
    howallofAfrica,andAfricansscatteredacrosstheglobe,cheeredforTogowhentheytookthe
    leadintheirfirstmatchoftheWorldCupagainstSouthKorea.TheentireAfricancontinent:
    somelivinginmustydormitoriesinMoscow...[in]NewJersey...inNairobiandLagosand
    Johannesburg...inthesuburbsofParis...inprisonsintheCentralAfricanRepubliccheeredfor
    alittlecountryinWestAfricathatmetaphoricallycarriedaflagrepresentingallofAfrica.
    Geographicallocation,ethnicbackground,andeconomicsituation,hadnotimpactonthe
    unificationofAfricansacrosstheworldinthatspecificmoment.Thecelebrationofthegoalby
    Togodefiedtimezonesandnationalboundaries;theperfectdepictionofaglobalizedworld.
