Innocent Models
In a year, we kill millions of animals to make sure that every cosmetic or medical
products we use is safe and healthy. Humans use animals as testing models because some
animals such as mice, monkey, dog, and rat are sharing genes with humans and their biological is
really close and similar to humans. Animals do not have any choices, humans use them as a
testing models, testing chemicals, and medicines on them without respecting animals rights.
However, even scientists know that tests that are being done on animals are not accurate, because
animals and humans biological is not exactly the same. Also there are some people who believe
that testing on animals is just for keeping human being safe from unhealthy chemical products.
Although, humans should not test cosmetic/medicinal products on animals for, because after all
of these damages to animals, the results will not be accurate.
Animals are used for testing of cosmetic/medicinal products because some animals share
genes with human. For example, chimpanzees share about 98% percent of their genes with
humans. But the two percentages make chimpanzees or any other animals different from
humans, are still there and can be really dangerous to humans. Those few percentages do not
affect on humans the same way they affected on animals, so the results of those experiments
might not be always 100% accurate. Dr. Richard Klausner talks about the dangers of using
animals to do researches on human diseases, he says The history of cancer research has been a
history of curing cancer in the mouse. (Klausner n.pag.). Also he adds We have cured mice of

Fakhra 2

cancer for decades--and it simply didn't work in humans. (klausner n.pag.). There have been
problems and wrong results, which can have all other things such as public health and economic
problems with it because if people get sick and have no money left to go to a doctor, it is going
to affect the economy and the public health of a society. Sheree Stachura, in an article named
Drug Safety: An Argument to Ban Animal Testing talked about how animal testing has a high
risk of danger in humans and animals life. She said The drug Vioxx was withdrawn from the
market. It was manufactured to be an anti-inflammatory medication. It passed animal studies on
mice, rats, and African green monkeys. The medication was with- drawn in the fall of 2004. The
drug caused cardiac and vascular disease when used in humans. It is estimated that as many as
60,000 Americans have died from the drug and that more than 100,000 Americans have been
injured. (Stachura 148). Testing medicines and cosmetic products on animals and getting results
which are not accurate, can have too many troubles with itself.
Imagine that you get locked up in a really tight and dark cage, being used for a chemical
test, and have no idea if you are going to continue your life or not, you do not have the options to
choose if you want to be a testing model or not, you are shaking and scare of everything around
you, the only thing that you can do is scream and move hard to prevent them from testing
something on your body. Is it not scary? This is a horrible nightmare for most humans, because
they always had their choices, they never have been in any situation like that because they
believe there is nothing greater, stronger, and smarter than them. Being selfish makes human
think that he is the most important in this living world, and he is allowed to do whatever he
wants with nature and other living species for his own benefit. Animals have feeling too, they
can get hurt and uncomfortable. It is true that animals and humans are different, but they are both
living things on earth, each one is capable of different things, and the need that they both have to

each other makes our environment. Sadly, humans cannot see the importance of not killing
animals because they think that they are greater than animals. We, as humans should understand
that as we all have different rights for different things, animal do too, and hurting or killing them
for our health is not a right thing to do, because there are so many animal lives that are being
wasted for our usage and health.
Although, some people believe that animals are the best choice for testing chemical
products. People might have different thoughts and beliefs about hurting animals or taking their
lives for testing cosmetic/medicinal products, because based on what Rachel Hajar said, Many
people also believe that animals are inferior to humans those in favor for animal testing argue
that experiments on animals are necessary to advance medical and biological knowledge. (Hajar
n.pag.). Animals are not testing models for humans, they are part of this world too, they are
important for the nature and humans. Actually animals play most of the ecosystem, therefore the
cycle (ecosystem) would not be the same, it is going to fall apart, humans will get hurt and wont
be able to continue a healthy life without animals and the importance of them in humans life.
Humans should not be allowed to kill animals because of their own health and safety. As
I said above, animals are alive and have the same senses as humans have, therefore they have
rights as well as humans. One of the most important rights is live freely, which is for both
humans and animals. Killing animals for experimental purposes is a really fast way to extinct a
couple kinds of animals. Animal research also affects economy, because it is directly connected
to public health and even it might cause death of human and even animals. Animal research has
many more of bad affects than good affects on our life. Understand the situation of animals
which are being use for testing and instead of finding differences between ourselves and them,
which make some people to think animals are inferior to humans we can find the similarities.

Most animals love humans, so it is our responsibility to show them that we love them back by
giving them their right to live freely.
