Beyond

This project should help

show off each students
culture, can connect
students together, and help
the teacher learn about
what they can do to help
the students. If I learn
maybe their parents do not
speak English, have a
translator at meetings or
send letters home in
Spanish, help the student
practice the English
language better. This lesson
is designed to not only help
the students share and
show off their culture, but
help the teacher understand
their students better

Day 1 (add additional days as needed)

Sponge Activity (activity that will be done as students enter the room to get them into the mindset
of the concept to be learned)
Fact of the day: Carrie Underwoods debut album has outsold both Rhianna and Katy Perrys best
selling albums combined
Anticipatory Set (focus question/s that will be used to get students thinking about the days lesson)
How to develop the necessary information for your presentation
Activating Prior Knowledge (what information will be shared with/among students to connect to
prior knowledge/experience)
Follow and answer the graphic organizer on Who Are You?
Direct Instruction (input, modeling, check for understanding)
1. Tell students about the speech they are going to present:
A. A speech on who they are giving a 3 minute presentation their background/culture. The
students would have to bring in something from their home that represents their culture and
present to the class what it is, how it relates to their culture, and what they take from it. In
doing this students will be able to tell the class about themselves, inform students of new
information (if not already known), and the students can learn about each other.
2. Give students the speech preparation outline and go over each part
3. What is your attention grabber? The attention material should be a way to grab the audiences
attention, whether it make them think or laugh it needs to be eye opening and make them want to
listen.
4. Next you must reveal your topic Today I am going to talk to you about my heritage and how
being an Italian shaped me growing up.
5. What makes you credible? This par tells the audience that you know what you are talking about
and why you are able to talk about this topic.
6. Now you go to the main point of your speech. Each main point should answer the questions
from the organizer
7. The sub-points or supporting material is the information explaining why you are discussing this
main point or why it is important
8. The transition statements are simply a transition to the next point my first point, my next point,
my last point try and make them creative.
9. Summarize the points said as a final statement and end on a thought provoking power
statement. Something that will make you memorable.
10. Have students work in groups of 3 while filling out the outline.
Guided Practice (how students will demonstrate their grasp of new learning)
Help fill out the outline if needed
Independent Practice (what students will do to reinforce learning of the lesson)
Filling out the outline
Closure (action/statement by teacher designed to bring lesson presentation to an appropriate
close)
