Love is What You See
Love has no boundary, no time, no gender, and no face. Love is a connection that can
bring people together as one. Perception of a person, like their appearance, can determine
whether there is an attraction for one another. Many would disagree that appearance does not
matter when wanting to meet someone due to the fact that it is what is inside that counts. When it
come to the personality of someone, it counts the most. However, appearance does play a big
factor when meeting someone for it is the first to you see. In the novel, Every Day by David
Levithan, As appearance to Rhiannon does play a factor of her wanting to be with A due to the
fact that he changes into different body every day. Although appearance might not be the most
important thing to others, Rhiannon does care about As appearance which effects their
relationship with one another and the connection As is trying to make; Because of this, the
choices, the actions, and the result that happen are for love he has for Rhiannon.
The choices people do are what make their outcome be what they are. When As make the
choice to have a connection with Rhiannon, they were trying to make their relationship work
even with the big obstacle of A always be in a different body every day. When A is in a body, he
tries not make any connection with anyone because he knows that he is not going to be in the
same body the next day. In the novel, He talks about how he does not try to make connections
with anyone for reason of the past; he explains by saying, I would make bonds without

acknowledging how quickly and permanently they would break. I took others peoples lives
personally. I felt their friends could be my friends, their parents could be parents. But after a
while, I had to stop, it was too heartbreaking to live with so many separations (Levithan 7).
Though his life, he had live with waking up in new environment and lifestyle every morning.
When he was younger, he wanted to feel a sense of belonging to a family and to someone he
would meet but would soon realize that he would not never be able to see them the next day. He
soon learns to accept he cannot interfere with the peoples lives he possess and learns to stop
trying to make connections with anyone. It was not until it all changed when he meets Rhiannon.
Upon meet her, he starts to do anything to see her. A falls in love with Rhiannon, making him
changes his views about not wanting make lasting connection.
The actions that A try to get closer to Rhiannon only complicates their relationship even
further. When A decide to try finally given a chance to having a connection with Rhiannon,
problem started to from there. Rhiannon has a difficult time trying to be with A. Although she
started growing feeling for A, she cannot go pass the Physical form as he changes into different
bodies, boys or girls. When A was in a teen body who was gay, to decide to become his own
person, despite knowing that he should not do things that would effect to person life. He decides
to look for Rhiannon thought the eyes of Austin. Austin is a boy that A possess; with his body, he
try to go seek Rhiannon. Love make people do things that they would not normally do for the
sake of wanting to be with their significant other.
As A explains how he is acting as he knows he is doing thing out of the norm of the
person normal lifestyle, he mentions, This is what loves does: it makes you want to rewrite the
world. It makes you want to choose the characters, build the scenery, guide the plot. The person
you love sits across from you, and you want to do everything in your power to make it possible

(Leviathan 175). With him looking her, he began following his desire instead of following the
everyday routine of the person he is in. With the actions he did with following his own agenda,
there were consequences for his action which affected to body he was in. When A was in Nathan
body, he went to a party to where Rhiannon was. After hanging out there too long he knew he
needed to go back to sleep but knew he wouldnt make it so he falls asleep in an interstate
leaving the body to wake up in the on a highway. Knowing he did wrong, he felt guilty with what
he did, Poor Nathan Daldry. He is going to be to wake up on the side of an interstate, an hour
away from his home. I can only imagine how terrified hell be (Leviathan 75). A feels bad for
what he put Nathan though but he did it anyway for Rhiannon, he says I am monster for doing
this to him. But I have reason (Leviathan 75). The reason for doing to what he did is justify by
wanting to be with Rhiannon for a night. The drive that A has to see Rhiannon is similar to the
little girl in the story, The Secondhand Bookseller, who does her best to buy a book. She sells
pencil box and even give up her favorite easer in order to buy a book (Nemat 571).As the little
girl tries her hardest to go to buy another book, A tries his hardest to go see Rhiannon. The
connection to this is the desire of wanting something that you would do any for.
With A every attempt to give Rhiannon a relationship she deserves, he ultimately let her
go to someone he knows will let her be happy. Her happiness is what A want most. The result of
A letting her be happy is he way of showing her his love he has toward her. He knew that not
everything ends the way people want them it to, as he says I wanted love to conquer all. But
love cant conquer anything (Leviathan 281). As much as he wants to be with her, he knows that
its a relationship that can last. He knows that love cannot be the only that can help them be
together. The challenges he faces with Rhiannon made it difficult to have a normal relationship.
With switching bodies, what is inside, which is A personality, is put to a rough path with trying to

get closer to Rhiannon. Another problem was being in bodies that live hours away from
Rhiannon and switch to a body that be boy to girl bodies making it difficult for them to be
together. As mention, appearances plays a big role in this situation with A and Rhiannon.
However, many would have it is not the case in other situation. Many would say that look
does not matter, that it all about what is in that counts. When looking for someone you want to be
with, it its the way you get along with someone. A famous childhood movie that shows that the
inner beauty is matter most is the classic Disney; Beauty and the Beast. In the classic movie, the
beautiful woman is taken by an ugly monster that is cursed. The only way to break the curse is
by having the girl fall in love the curse man in his monster form. The Disney movie teaches the
lesson that no matter the way the person looks, it what is inside that really matter for true love
(Disney). There are people who do not look at the physical form for attraction but by their
personality. Their sexual orientation is called Pansexual. Pansexual is pertaining to the theory
that all human behavior is based on sexuality (dictionary.com). In other words, pansexual based
their attraction on personality.
People who are pansexual do not care about gender, age, race, or region, it all about the
way people are. Many would confuse pansexual with bisexual because they both do not just
pursue a certain gender. These sexual orientations are more on inner beauty of other person. A
woman who, the article by Aril Scarlett Callis, identify as pansexual explain Fruit identified
solely as pansexual because, If Im going to be with someone, I dont want to let things like
genitalia, skin color, or social status get in the way. She also felt that pansexual was as close as
she could get to not having a label at all, and that she only used it because she could not say I
dont have one (73). Appearances in Pansexual point of view does not matter as much.

However, appearance is something that does matter wanting to be in a relationship for other
people.
There is truth in saying that whats inside counts more than inner beauty but when
someone is meeting another person for the first time its what they look like, the way they carry
themselves determine whether you are attracted to this person. The first impressions are based on
how we look. When have a first bad impression, the personality is not judge but the way they are.
Appearances does say a lot of things about a person before getting to know them. For instance, in
the story by Marina Nemat, is about a little girl who loves to read. When coming in a store to buy
a book, the owner immediately gets the impression that she does not know English based on how
she looks like. The owner assumes from the next time she visits that she had a hard time reading,
let me guess: you wouldnt understand a word, and now you want your money back (the
Secondhand bookseller 273). To the man surprise, the girl read all the pages of the book and
understand it. Amazed by this, he let borrow any book she wanted to read. It shows how
appearances overpower whats inside because of the first impressions that the person had.
When meeting someone for the first, the way person look is the first thing you look at.
The way the person look is one the big thing you look for finding the other person attraction. In
everyday, appearance matters as Rhiannon could not look past the physical form. When in a
relationship however, is when the inner beauty overpowers looks. When you spend time with
some who you think is attractive but has a disliked personality, the first attractiveness starts to
diminish as you start not liking how they are. Someone can look so handsome/ beautiful on the
outside but if their personality is horrible, the personal attraction decreases. This would show
how inner beauty overpower outside beauty. As time rolled on Rhiannon did start to love A for
what he was inside looking past the physical form that he would change to.

Iraheta 6

The Action, choices, and the results of A doing anything to try to be with Rhiannon is
how he had love for her. The important of appearance is that Rhiannon had shown of it was
difficult for them to together. With Appearance being one of the big factors of liking someone,
what was inside is truly something that outshines outer self. As there are people in this world that
show that looks do not matter. As it is said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
