HighnessPrincessCarolineLouiseMargueriteofMonaco..."[15]WithouttheRoyalAssent,themarriage
wouldhavebeenvoidinBritainwhereErnstAugust'sfamilyownspropertyandhislawfuldescendants
remaininsuccessiontoboththeBritishcrownandthetwosuspendedpeerages.[16]Similarlythe
MongasquecourtofficiallynotifiedthegovernmentofFranceofCaroline'smarriagetoErnstAugust,
receivingassurancethattherewasnoobjectionincompliancewiththe(sincedefunct)Franco
MonegasqueTreatyof1918.Moreover,inorderforCarolinetoretainherclaimtothethroneofMonaco
andtotransmitsuccessionrightstofutureoffspring,thecouplewerealsoobligedtoobtaintheapproval
ofyetathirdnation,intheformofofficialconsenttothemarriageofCaroline'sfather,PrinceRainierIII
asthesovereignofMonaco.[4]
Nonetheless,CarolinewasaRomanCatholicandErnstAugusttheheirmaleofGeorgeIIIwhenthe
couplewed,atwhichtimeaprovisionoftheActofSettlement1701stipulatedthatintheeventthe
Britishcrownistodevolveuponanheirmarriedto"aPapist",thatheirispermanentlydisabledfrom
succeedingtothethrone,whichwouldpassinsteadtothenextProtestantintheorderofsuccessionwho
hadnotbeenmarriedtoaRomanCatholic.TheSuccessiontotheThroneActof2013likewiserepealed
thatmaritalrestriction(alsoembodiedintheBillofRights1689),withretroactiveeffect,asof26March
2015.[14]
On28November1988,whileauthoritiesremovedthebodyofPrincessIsabellaofHanover(1962
1988)fromthehomeinGmunden,northernAustriashehadsharedwithherhusband,ErnstAugust's
youngerbrotherPrinceLudwigRudolphofHanover,andinvestigatedthedrugstrewnscene,Ludwig
Rudolph,distraughtoverhiswife'sapparentlyaccidentalheroinoverdose,placedacalltohisbrotherin
London,imploringhimtotakecareofthecouple's10montholdson.[17][18]Thenhefled.Hourslater
LudwigRudolphwasfounddead,apparentlyavictimofsuicide,nearhisfamily'shuntinglodgeseveral
milesaway,onLakeTraun.[17][17][19]CustodyoftheirinfantsonOttoHeinrichwaseventuallyawarded,
contrarytotheexpressedwishesofLudwigRudolphasthesurvivingparentandErnstAugust'slegal
efforts,tothechild'smaternalgrandparents,CountAriprand(19251996)andCountessMariavon
ThurnundValsassinaComoVercelli(born1929),toberaisedattheirfamilyseat,BleiburgCastlein
southernAustria.[18]
InSeptember2009itwasreportedintheFrenchandEnglishpressthatErnstAugusthasbeenliving
separatelyfromhiswifeCaroline,whohadreturnedtoMonaco.[20]

HewasphotographedurinatingontheTurkishPavilionattheExpo2000eventinHanover,causinga
diplomaticincidentandacomplaintfromtheTurkishembassyaccusinghimofinsultingtheTurkish
people.Hesuccessfullysuedthosewhopublished(BildZeitung)thephotographforinvasionofprivacy,
obtaininganawardof9,900euros,althoughthepaperhadpreviouslypublishedaphotoofErnstAugust
urinatingoutsideahospitalinAustria.[21]
In2004,hewasconvictedofaggravatedassaultandcausinggrievousbodilyharmaftersupposedly
beatingamanwithaknuckleduster.[22][23]Hehasdemandedaretrialforthecaseonthebasisoffalse
evidence.Hislawyershavepubliclystatedthathehasneverownedaknuckledusterinhislifenorheld

OnMonday,3April2005,ErnstAugustwasadmittedtohospitalwithacutepancreatitis.Thenextday,
hefellintoadeepcoma,twodaysbeforethedeathofhisfatherinlaw,RainierIII,PrinceofMonaco.
OnFriday,8April2005,hospitalofficialsreportedthathewasnolongerinacomabutremainedin
intensivecare.AreportthesamedayonBBCWorlddescribedhisconditionas"seriousbutnot
irreversible."On9April2005,accordingtoareportonBBC,ahospitalspokesmanreportedthatErnst
Augustwasreceiving"permanentmedicalcare."Hehassincebeenreleasedandwassubsequentlyseen
inpublicwithhiswife.
