Unit Goal(s)
By the end of this lesson students will be able to label the parts of a compass by getting 4 out of 6 on the
task sheet correct. Students will also begin to understand how to navigate their way around an orienteering
course.

Induction
Students will learn the basics and fundamentals of orienteering. They will do this to learn a survival skill and
how to navigate in wilderness. They will learn the parts of orienteering and how to use a compass/pace to
get to a known point.

Idea
Students will grasp how to find and use a compass, their pace to understand the basics of orienteering and
finding a known point.

Idaho Standard 1: Demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical
activities.
9-12.PE.1.1.1 Demonstrate competency in basic and advanced skills and tactics in at least five leisure and lifetime physical
activities (e.g., individual/dual/team-related sports, outdoor pursuits, rhythm, fitness, and aquatics).
Idaho Standard 5: Exhibit responsible and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.
9-12.PE.5.1.2 Demonstrate leadership by holding themselves and others responsible for following safe practices, rules,
procedures, and etiquette in physical activity settings (e.g. assumes an active leader and/or supportive role as appropriate during
a ropes course activity, acknowledge a rule infraction, plan and lead a backpacking trip, coordinate a fun run, respecting others
