Lesson Length:

unknown

Facilities: Old Arboretum (weather permitting) or Gymnasium 201

Equipment (include amount):

Leave No Trace posters, 7 cone set up in the field near the pavilion, whisperlite stoves (outdoor

program), ziplock baggies with freeze-dried food (mashed potatoes or like-wise item that is quick cooking), hot pads, disposable
cups for eating ($1 store), small pots (3 from outdoor program), disposable silverware, napkins, paper towels, water, 1 st aid kit

Unit Goal(s)

Learn to safely operate a Whisperlite stove and learn about the 7 principles of Leave No Trace for the
outdoors

Lesson
Summary /
Set
Induction

Students will be allowed to cook on a Whisperlite backpacking stove after completing a safety check.
Students may camp with their families and friends, and they need to know how to safely operate a camping
stove. Idahoans spend time in the outdoors so it is important to be prepared. They will complete the
safety check, proceed to cook food after washing their hands, and then be allowed to eat the food they
prepared.

Lesson Big
Idea

Camping is a lifetime enjoyable activity that includes cooking and taking care of the environment.

National Standards and Grade Level Outcomes:

Standard 1: Skilled Movement
GlO: S1.H1.L2: refines activity-specific movement skills in one or more lifetime activities (outdoor pursuits,
individual-performance activities, aquatics, net/wall games or target games).
Standard 3: The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a
health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
GLO: S3.H4.L1- Evaluates according to their benefits, social support network, and participation requirements
activities that can be pursued in the local environment.
Standard 4: The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self
and others.

and/or dance.
Standard 5: The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment,
challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.
GLO: S5.H2.L2- Chooses an appropriate level of challenge to experience success and desire to participate in a selfselected physical activity.
Idaho Standards:
9-12.PE.1.1.1: Demonstrate competency in basic and advanced skills and tactics in at least five leisure and
lifetime physical activities (e.g. individual/dual/team-related sports, outdoor pursuits, rhythm, fitness, aquatics).
9-12.PE.3.1.1: participate in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for at least 50% of the lesson time (e.g. time
assessment, pedometer = 3200 steps in a 40 minute lesson or 80 steps per minute block or traditional schedule,
etc.).
9-12.PE.5.1.1: Demonstrate the ability to initiate responsible personal and social behavior, function
independently, and positively influence the behavior of others in physical activity setting (e.g. develop code of
ethics, sportsmanship recognition, volunteer, assist in elementary class, etc.).

PEP 421 Secondary Methods in Physical Activity Pedagogy

Lesson Plan
1) Learn the 7 principles of Leave No Trace for camping/cooking, and be able to
answer 5 of the 7 principles correctly while reflecting at the closure.
2) Demonstrate stove safety by completing a blank stove diagram labeling 9 out of
10 correctly.
3) Cook a freeze-dried item using a WhisperLite backpacking stove without burning
the food in 3 minutes.

Teacher Objectives: The teacher will be able to:

1) Give specific and appropriate comments on student performance during teaching stove safety, cooking, Leave No
Trace activities.
2) Organize students appropriately for the safety lesson.
3) Keep positive during transporting students to Lena Whitmore or University of Idaho (weather dependent).

Developmental Analysis of Content (highlight the section of the DAC this lesson will focus on)
Extension
Starting Point:
Wait in a group for stove safety
demonstration with instructions.

Refinement
Demonstrate WhisperLite stove parts
and stove safety within your group.

Application
Label the WhisperLite stove parts on a
diagram.

Stove is set safely on a flat surface.

Groups safely place stove on a flat

surface (i.e. picnic table) for stability.

Did your group check to see if the stove

is stable on a flat surface?

Stoves may be lit by the group.

Safely light the stove after pumping the

fuel properly.

Stove was lit and safety was followed.

Students may cook the instant/freezedried food after washing hands.

Wash hands before handling food.

Hands were washed before cooking.

Please stay with your group.
Whisperlite stoves are light and easy to
operate when you are backpacking or
camping with your family.
In order to be safe, you will need to learn
how to safely light a Whisperlite stove.
The stove parts operated in order are:

1. Screw fuel pump into Canister.

2. Connect fuel line from stove to pump.
6 of 12

PEP 421 Secondary Methods in Physical Activity Pedagogy

Lesson Plan
3. Make sure all connections are tight and secure and
that includes ensuring that the pump is properly screwed
on to the fuel canister. You dont know how important
this step is until you try to light the stove with an
improperly screwed on pump. All it takes is a lack of
attention and big problems arise. Its happened to me.
4. Pump the stove a good 15 times. The less fuel in your
can the more you need to pump.
5. Open valve so fuel flows in to cup of stove.
6. Light the fuel preferably using a lighter with a long
handle so your hand doesnt get to close to the flame.
7. Once you see fuel in fuel cup, turn the valve off!!!!
This is critical. If you dont do this you will get a flame
shooting up several feet. It happens.

Safety reminder
for camping:
No lighting
stoves under a
tarp or inside a
tent.
1

8. Once the flame has died off, turn the valve back on
and light the fuel.

1.1

9. Once this is done you should have a nice steady blue

flame with the sweet whisperlite roar!
10 Keep in mind that you cannot simmer with the MSR
Whisperlite though you can with the Dragonfly. Get
around this by holding your pan or pot higher above
flame.
11 Remember, Never light your stove inside your tent or
under a tarp.

Carefully pour
hot water into

12 MSR fuel cans come in 11 oz, 22 oz and 33 oz sizes.
Avoid the 33 oz can unless you are cooking for a group
and will be cooking for hours. If you are hiking solo or
with one person you dont need the 33 oz can. Solo
hikers out for only a few days should do fine with the
11 oz size.

I find the 22 oz can is the best all around size. It holds

enough fuel to last for a week long trip. In the Northeast
US you are never more than a weeks worth of hiking
from the next fuel resupply. For 95+ percent of us,
cooking on the trail involves little more than boiling
water.
