Students will gain an understanding of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression
Students will gain confidence working in groups
Students will gain confidence speaking publicly
(Same from yesterday)
Standard: 1. Oral Expression and Listening
1. Communication skills and interviewing techniques are required to gather
information and to develop and deliver oral presentations.
a. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in
groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and
issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. (CCSS:
SL.8.1)
i. Come to discussions prepared, having read or researched material under
study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence on the
topic, text, or issue to probe and reflect on ideas under discussion. (CCSS:
SL.8.1a)
ii. Follow rules for collegial discussions and decision-making, track
progress toward specific goals and deadlines, and define individual roles as
needed. (CCSS: SL.8.1b)
iii. Pose questions that connect the ideas of several speakers and respond to
others questions and comments with relevant evidence, observations, and
ideas. (CCSS: SL.8.1c)
iv. Acknowledge new information expressed by others, and, when
warranted, qualify or justify their own views in light of the evidence
presented. (CCSS: SL.8.1d)
v. Identify a central idea and prepare and ask relevant interview questions
for researching and developing ideas further vi. Evaluate the effectiveness
of the techniques used and information gained from the interview
vii. Give a planned oral presentation to a specific audience for an intended
purpose
Briefly remind students what they are doing today
-Finishing any last minute research
-Compiling information into a slide presentation
-Presenting information to the class
They will be given 35 minutes to work.
At that point, they will need to make sure that their presentation is
complete.
(1 minute)
Once time is up, have a cluster volunteer for whom they want to present
first. If no one volunteers, start with the group you feel is the most prepared.
Ask them to all come to the smartboard and begin setting up for the
presentation. As they are setting up, pass out 4 sticky notes to each student
remember to leave sticky notes on desks of the presenters
Explain that these sticky notes are to write praises for each cluster

presenting. Explain that this is not the time for them to offer criticism. It is
then important to explain that it takes courage to come to the front of the
room and present. So, the class as a whole needs to be active listeners.
Each group will have 4 minutes to present
While the next group is setting up, have students deliver their sticky note
praises to the group that just got done presenting
note to self: this could get messy quick. If you see this going badly or
taking too much time in period one, have students wait to deliver
praises until after all the clusters are done presenting.
(20 minutes)
Closure
