Class: Honors Algebra II
Grade Level: All
Unit: Linear Systems
Teacher: Ms. Frederick
Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing
on pairs of linear equations in two variables
Iowa Core Curriculum-Subject Area Standard(s)
Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing
on pairs of linear equations in two variables. (A-REI.6.)
21st Century Skill(s)
Elaborate, refine, analyze and evaluate their own ideas in order to improve and maximize
creative efforts
Use various types of reasoning (inductive, deductive, etc.) as appropriate to the situation
Essential Question
How does writing equivalent equations help you solve a system of equations?
Objectives
Students will be able to solve systems in three variable using elimination.
Students will be able to solve systems in three variable using substitution.
Anticipatory Set
Bell Work:
Page 162 #25-27
After bell work Students can ask questions about their homework or the bell work.
Teaching: Activities
Teacher will pass out the hand out. This will used to guide the conversation into the
lesson.
Teacher will ask What have we learned so far about linear systems? How did we solve
systems with 2 variables? This will answer the K part.
Then I will show them the title of this section is Systems with three Variables and ask
them What will we want to know now knowing the title of the lesson? This will answer
the W part.
Next I will ask them to brainstorm some ideas as to how they think that we can go about
answering our questions. This will be the H part.
Next we will go through a few different examples using their suggested solutions. If they
work then the teacher will ask What did we just learn and how did it build on top of
what we have been doing all along? This will be the L part.
Now how can the students apply what we have come up with as solutions to examples
they will work on. After they work on their examples the teacher will go over the
examples step by step asking Why do we do this step? and have the students critically
think about why each step is important. This will be the A part.
After going through the whole process of solving systems with three variable, the teacher
will ask them to take a few minutes to write down any questions they have. Then the
teacher will ask Are there any questions about todays lesson? This will be the Q part.
Closure
2
Give your 2 on what you learned today. Draw 2 circles to represent pennies. In the
circles write what you learned today.
