WhyandWhenWeSpeakSpanishinPublic
InMyrianMarquezescolumnfortheOrlandoSentinel,WhyandWhenWeSpeak
SpanishinPublic,sheassertstheimportanceofspeakingonesnativetongue,andbeingable
continuouslyuse,hasonupholdingonesculturalheritage.SpeakingSpanishinpublicisinno
wayintendedtobedisrespectfultobystandersthatareunabletounderstandtheconversation,
howeveritdoesprovidecomfortwhenoneisabletospeakfreelywithoutfearingthejudgment
ofotherswhentheirpronunciationandgrammarisnotonpoint.SpeakingSpanishinpublic,or
forthatmatteroffactwhicheverlanguageonepossestheabilitytocommunicatein,intheU.S.A
shouldbelookeduponthesamewayasspeakingEnglishinpublicastheU.Sdoesnothavean
officiallanguage.Denyingpeopletospeakinthelanguageoftheirchoosingwouldresultin
moretensesocialenvironmentswithpeoplebeingafraidtospeak,andaccordingtothe
Constitutionshouldevenberegardedasillegal.
MarquezhighlightsthattherighttospeakSpanishinpublichasbeenearnedthroughthe
effortsofpreviousbilingualandmonolingualspeakers,yetinanattempttolookthroughthe
perspectiveofthosewhoopposehershealsodisclosesexceptionsofwhenoneshouldrefrain
fromspeakinginadifferentlanguage.Nonnativespeakershaveplayedasmuchofaroleas
nativespeakersinconstructingthegreatnationweliveintoday,theyhavefoughtforthis

countryinU.S.ledwarsjustasanyother,puttingtheirlivesatriskinordertoensurefora
bettertomorrow(Marquez1).Aswellasbeingactivemembersofthegovernmentparticipating
fullyinthenation'sdemocracybyvoting,andprovidinglabourwhereneededtobuildasolid
foundationforsocietytogrowon(1).Ifpeoplehavethetimetoconsideritrudeorcreate
scenariosinthereheadthinkingthattheyaretalkingaboutthem,thentheyshouldalsobeable
toconsiderthefactgenerallythattheymightactuallyhavebeenhavinganormalconversation,
andbesidesmostofthetimepeopleprefernottowastetheminisculeamountoftimethathaveto
speakintheirnativetonguediscussingrandomstrangers(1).Furthermore,Marquezmoredirectly
addressesthisissuebystatingthatitisnotintendedtoberude,andsheunderstandsthatone
shouldnothaveaconversationinSpanishwhentheirisapersonthatisonlycapableofspeaking
English.Justasoneconsidersittoberespectfulandaportrayalofhowmuchonecareswhen
shakinghandsorhuggingtheirparents,grandparents,andfamilytheactofspeakingSpanish
representsthesameideaandalsograntscomfortintheirculturalroots.Beingbilingualinboth
GermanandEnglishthiscomplexdilemmaisoneIfaceonadaytodaybasis,yetIdonotallow
ittoaffectme.OnewouldnotrespondtotheirEnglishspeakinggrandparentinFrench,soI
choosenotrespondtomygrandmotherinEnglishwhensheaddressesmeinGerman.
PeoplearewitnessingtheirchildrenandgrandchildrenbecomingsoAmericanthat
theyresistspeakinginSpanish,theextremedesiretobepartoftheculturalnormhasgoneso
farthatchildrenarebeginningtodistancethemselvesfromtheirheritageinordertofitinwith
everyoneelse(2).IfthiscontinuestheU.S.willnolongerbeabletoconsideritselfasaladbowl,
andthediversitythatmakesourcountrysouniquewillbeallbutadistantmemory.Marquez
presentseasilyjustifiedargumentsthataddressreaderswhosharethesameopinionasher,as

wellasthosewhoopposeherorareunsureofwheretheystand,alongwithadequateevidence
thatsupportsherclaimastowhyeveryonewhocanspeakSpanishshouldbeabletodosoin
public.
