Country: Myanmar (Burma)

Committee: UNICEF 1
Delegate: Acel Dioso

Introduction
In many countries refugee minors are getting separated from their parents and have to go
on their own journey. Refugee minors are more vulnerable to sexual abuse and travel in
unfamiliar places. This is an important topic that we need to fix because minors are losing their
childhood. There are currently 43 million refugee worldwide, 41% are minors, and half of minors
are girls. The number is growing dramatically, this has been the highest number since the mid
1990s. Another issue is minors have more difficulty resettling permanently than adults. Minors
are received, processed, held, or returned.

National Actions
In Myanmar this is a problem because minors are more vulnerable than adults. There are
a lot of rape cases in Myanmar, so this occurs often. A police from Yangon Region, a city in
Myanmar, said that if a minor gets raped, they do not defend themselves and often do not report
it. Many people from Myanmar are traveling to Thailands refugee camp. While traveling they
have to hide if they see the Burmese military. Sexual violence is being used as a tool by the
Burmese military to demoralize and destroy ethnic communities (Ibrahim, Azeem.). The
Burmese have raped minors before. Awful things are happening in my country and we need to
stop it.

UN Actions and International Actions

In 2008, the UNV (United Nations Volunteers) worked with Myanmar. They helped by
focusing on the youth by building peace and collaborating with other UN agencies. Their project
has improved in 2015. They have been working hard in order to better integrate youth and
increase volunteerism through public advocacy and awareness raising. President Barack Obama
has suggested that Burma needs to include all people to successfully develop its economy. The
Obama administration sends mixed messages, appealing cordially with Burmese military leaders
even in the immediate aftermath of violent attacks on Rohingya towns in 2013.

Resolution Ideas
Burmas conflict is the political, social and military this has gained international
attention.
