JUSTIFY NEEDS
Hello, we are 8th grade students from Instituto Anglo Britanico and for this
bimester we will be working with the Innovation Fair project at our Design class.
We have been looking for actual problems in the world, after the research we
choose one and well be elaborating one product to solve that problem. Besides
making easier the house cleaning, our product will be solving healths problems
occasioned by the inefficient cleaning in the house.
The inefficient cleaning in the house, such as not cleaning correctly; the
bad use of cleaning tools; or even the bad habit of cleaning with low frequency,
can lead to generate dust or dust mites inside your house, which can later cause
several and dangerous problems in our health. This problem is occurring inside
every house in the world and 24/7, since dust is produced always and if it is left it
becomes more and more.
Another health problem occasioned by some of the normal pickers, is the
Low back pain. This problem is a leading cause of disability. It interferes with
quality of life and work performance. Studies in the United Kingdom identified
back pain as the most common cause of disability in young adults; the survey
implicated back pain in more than 100 million work days lost per year. (Herlich,
2003)
One of the health problems occasioned is pneumoconiosis which calls
some type of lung disease caused by inhalation of dust. This simply means
"dusty lung" and because of this, the lungs become stiff and lose their elasticity
and may cause scar tissue. Some particles of dust dissolve into the bloodstream.
The blood then carries the substance in the body where it can affect the brain,
kidneys and other organs. When breathing dust, the released particles are taken
by other macrophages inside the body. (Efectos del polvo en los pulmones, 2002 )
Another health problem occasioned by breathing a high amount of dust is
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases, which cover some lung diseases such
as bronchitis or emphysema. Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary
Diseases have difficulties with breathing, as the walls of the airways from the
nose to their lungs are damaged, scarred and narrowed, leading to an airflow
obstruction. (NHS, 2014)
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases, is one of the most common
respiratory diseases in the UK. It usually only starts to affect people over the age
of 35, although most people are not diagnosed until they are in their 50s. They
are more than 3 million people living with the disease in the UK, of which only
about 900,000 have been diagnosed. Many people who develop symptoms of
COPD do not get medical help because they often dismiss their symptoms as a
smokers cough. (NHS, 2014)

OBJECTIVE
The objective of our product is to help housekeeper improve their health
and cleaning.

PRIORITIZE RESEARCH
We look for companies that were solving the same or similar problems as
us, and we found several (focusing on Mexicans) companies which produce
cleaning products, specially brooms. They are the following:

La Mexicana
Is a company founded in 1974, which in 1976 made the first broom. Today
they manufacture plastic brooms fan type, brush type brooms, hand brushes,
brooms pumps and WC, mops, squeegees, fibers, pickers, among others; all in
different models and all types of surfaces from rough to fine and industrial and
wood. In the actually they export their products to the United States, the
Caribbean, Central and South America. (La mexicana, 2016)

La Reynera
La Reynera is a broom company with a purpose of manufacturing and
marketing cleaning products, since 1918 when Peter Trevino escobera an
industry founded with the name of Reynera. The first floor broom was located in
the city of Monterrey, with a production capacity of 10 dozen daily brooms. Today,
they have extended themselves internationally with the mission of brooming with
high quality materials. (La reynera, 2014)

La Palma de Oro
Is a company distributor of brooms and brushes natural fibers (including
palm, whose material gave rise to its name), jargons and mops. La Palma de
Oro is a company composed by two enterprises: Integraciones Plsticas SA de
CV qnd Perfiles Metlicos. Currently the sell internationaly, even helping during
the post war period years ago. (La palma de oro, 2012)
In conclussion, all of these companies have in common with us is the fact
that we want to create a cleaning product, in our case a picker, with quality and
efficient materials, and give a better cleaning. The pro our product has in
comparison with these companies products, is that ours will clean better, and
more efficiently than convensional brooms and pickers.

COMPARISON TABLE

A Simple
Picker

*A simple picker
the only function
that has is to
clean or pickup
the trash or
dust.
*This picker is
made of
aluminum and it
pollute more
than the plastic.
*This picker has
a short stick so
you need to
duck to use it.

Our Picker
*The cleaner picker can clean
your broom in an easy and
simple form.
*Its better because many people
needs to clean the broom and for
that they need to blend over to
clean it and with our picker you
only need to pass the broom into
the picks or sticks.
*It prevents diseases caused by
the dust.
*It combing the bristles of the
broom, so that prevents dust do
not mess both the broom.
*The material we use in this
picker pollute less than an
aluminum picker.

PRESENT FINAL CHOSEN DESIGN

For this product we had to make another justify need, prioritize research
because the original documents that my teammate made were incomplete or
wrong. To do so, after deciding which we were going to do, we realized that all
those documents were not okay. So, we divide several tasks between all the
team, like researchs, information, surveys, etc. so we could make them again
and correct.
After we had researched all the needed information, between me and one
of my teammates, we arranged all the information in order to create the justify
need and prioritize research again. We also had to make a completely new
objective and comparison table, because we didnt have done them before. So
we do them, with the actual product.

MATERIAL LIST

Coroplast box $80

Wooden stick (100cm) $12
Nails $24
Hammer
Saw
Ruler
Industrial glue $30
Termoplastic brush $20

PROCEDURE
1. First with a marker mark the areas of a coroplast box to give shape of a
picker.
2. Next very carefully cut with a saw the areas that you mark in the box
3. Then put the wooden stick together the cuten box and start to put the nails
at the back with a hammer to join the two parts
4. Finally paste with industrial glue a brush for the hair but it has to be big
enough and with the sticks widths.

JUSTIFY CHANGES MADE TO THE DESIGN

To begin with, we changed one of the materials. At first we were
thinking of using pvc sheets for the brush, but because it was very expensive and
hard to work with, besides we couldnt got it, we used instead a hair brush. But
why a hair brush? The material they are made of is called thermoplastic, a very
resistance material and ideal for brushing the brooms bristles, just like the
normal brush would do with hair.
Before deciding for using thermoplastic, we also think about
using the left parts of the coroplast box we used. We catted the box with a saw,
but because we wanted to cut smaller parts it was very dangerous to use the
saw. So we used kitchen scissors, but it was very hard to cut and they didnt end
up looking very good.

EXPLAIN HOW PRODUCT COULD BE IMPROVED

Since our product was a prototype of how the original is going to
be, we could have improved this time with the original plan. The original product
(the one we are going to sell to the public) is going to be made of the same
materials we used, but instead of us cutting them and giving them shape, we
would send them to be made with molds, so we would have coroplast bases and
thermoplastic brushes already made, and we just have to join them together.

CONCLUSSION
When we finished our product, we tested if it really worked, and it
does. With it, we picked up all the trash we had, and tried to clean the brooms
bristles with it, and again, it worked. We found very handy the cleaner picker,
because we didnt have to knee to pick up the trash, to take off all garbage stuck
in the broom and it was very helpful to take the trash and throw it away. We think
our product really achieved its objective, which was to improve the cleaning and
health from housekeepers and janitors.
