Characteristics of Adult Learners

http://theelearningcoach.com/learning/characteristics-of-adult-learners/
Due to being practical, I focused on the section on Practical (learning). I found it well
stated by Connie Malamed Adults in the workplace prefer practical knowledge and
experiences that will make work easier or provide important skills. In other words, adults
need

personal

relevance

in

learning

activities.

Connie

Malamed,

http://theelearningcoach.com/ I found these useful as adult learners are practical ones,

I am one. They want knowledge that they will find useful and practical. I plan to focus on
practical learning and show adult students how the lesson at hand will prove useful in
their workplaces by using workplace examples.
Motivational techniques

I found the section on make it real particularly interesting. This will help the student
better relate to how the delivered content will relate to their workplace. By using
everyday examples of how the content would be applied to their workplaces and by
delivering it in a format that they can relate to will be the key to success of this method. I
plan to use technologies that the students are already comfortable with, whether it is a
digital device or an old tool, the students will benefit from using knowledge they already
have and apply it to new content.
Assessment

I found the topic of summative vs formative assessment rather useful. I believe that a
combination of both formative and summative assessment is important. Formative
assessment throughout the delivery be useful for determining if students are ready to
progress. Assessments, during the delivery of the content, will also help the students
form learning goals by reinforcing strengths and determining weaknesses. They will also
be able to better define the learning goal and have a better expectation of how their
summative assessment will be calculated and what this may look like.

Media

Using media and social media in the class have strong parallels. Implementing media
presentation will draw attention to the subject while social media will allow the
conversation to become a discussion in a community. It will support locust of control
where the instructor can send students that are excelling forward and be used as a
supplement for challenged students. The goal is to provide encouragement, and the use
of these tools are not only enjoyed by most students, its also their most powerful tool.
The expectations of todays employer require device proficiency.
The following resource will be great for inspiration.

Planning
http://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/cur/science/found/kto4/planning.pdf
The planning article is a very valuable and detailed guide. The method of the guide
works well for me as it is a direct plan with instructions to follow for successful use. Mind
mapping is a great way to tailor the content. I will use it to start conversation and derive
lesson plans. It may be easy to establish a basis of competency and previous
knowledge from the mind mapping exercise. Students will benefit from the interaction
this approach provides. I appreciate the thought put into this, disregarding that it was
intended for kindergarten to grade four science instruction.
