Assignment #1 Instance of Personal and Institutional Discrimination

Abstract
The paper reviews personal discrimination in an environment where a child being treated
unfairly. However, she came from a home where they believe it takes a family to get
through anything. In fact, the same home where she felt safe and love is also at the same
home where she learned skin and hair made a different in family. With this in mind
unconsciously one never realize how caustic she have been toward a child who by all
means lack self-control and seeking attention. However being furious in, all things
considered, when a person has not had any educated about mental abuse you miss the
signs when a child act out. However, under those circumstances it is difficult to find out
the root of a behavior to an underlying problem. At the present time that will go into a
child teen years as an illustration of addicted behavior have surfaced into the situation.
Given these facts the paper will show how interpersonal relationship identification with
social work practice taking responsibility to be a counter to interact in a vicious cycle
discrimination making distinctions between the two. To put it briefly, individuals change
to positive communication by confronting areas in which social work practice treat
people equally.

Instance of Personal and Institutional Discrimination

My name is Tracy Hawthorne, born in Michigan and lived on Canton St from a child
until age of 22. As a child being brought up with my first cousin allow us to have a close
relationship. My auntie Doll-Baby lived across the street from my mom in other words
she is my mother only sister. However, my uncle Frank who just past December 27th,
2014 at the age of 83, God blesses him is my father older brother. He lived behind my
motherhouse on the next block where his back yard meets her back yard. My
grandmother whom we refer to, as Big Mom was a Native Indian and my Big Daddy,
who died before my birth stayed downstairs from my parents. In addition, we have other
relatives who live throughout the neighborhood too. However, besides what was the most
enjoyable moment in the summertime when we had to be on the porch by the time the
streetlights came on, we were able to have fun still. What's funny here in 2015 everyone
still stay on Canton including the neighbors? Even back in the 50's they were
homeowners and the properties are still well kept up.
As the years pass by things had start changing as we grew older or the maybe
changes were always there. Either we never notice with my Big Mom or her sons
children who included me were treated different from her daughters childrens. My dad
has two sisters who are also married to their family. However, Big Mom starts giving us
mix message my cousin, who are my dad brother childrens and me notice it too. In
addition, all the female relatives are highly yellow with fine long hair except me am
caramel complexion with long hair not fine and not really bad. In fact, she uses to make
little comments to my dad that Lynn, whom she refers to me by my middle name.

However, is a fast *** running around with these nappy hair little boys, where in the first
place back in those days growing up with four brother and no sister one would consider
me as an tomboy. In fact, my name changes from Big Mom calling me Lynn to Blackie.
She spoke about me to my cousin as if am not there at all making a statement" Lynn
going grow up not be ****."
However, my parents home is made where you can go from their upstairs to my Big
Mom house downstairs by going thru the basement. For this reason during Christmas
time we will be running upstairs to downstairs until one Christmas Big Mom had her
daughters and their family over for the Holiday dinner. Maybe my aunties and their
family always had meals every Christmas just this Holidays, and many following were
brought to my attention. Regardless my brothers, my uncle Frank's four kids and me were
asked to go home until after they have had their dinner. Then we can come back
afterward, another Christmas came back around while this year am at the age of ten. Big
Mom told me at this age you no longer receive any more gifts. By all means instead my
girls cousin and me had a discussion that our kids will never be raised where theyre
inferior to each other.
In other word, after having my daughter highly light skin and my other daughter with
gorgeous hair were invited to sit at Big Mom dinner table on Christmas. That is when the
issue was addressed because my children on Christmas stay upstairs with their other two
siblings, and we enjoy my parents for the Holiday. My father was raised not talk back to
his parents, which today it is not consider talking back in all due fairness it is called
having an opinion. My dad never answers my question why we never were invited to
holiday meals downstairs to his mother; however he did say mama was erroneous a lot by

his kids. Big Mama died 2003 of pancreatic cancer at the age 76, unfortunately in the end
the grandchild that she did not want around was by her bedside.
My cousin and me both birth daughter the same year. However, our kids have a close
relationship my three daughters and her three daughters are the same ages. Also, have a
very close relationship, the problem came one day my cousin call me telling me she
found eight video games hidden in her dryer when she was getting ready to wash their
clothes. In spite of that, her middle child has been stealing, and the games belong to my
daughters. In fact, there was another incident where my mother had a Bar-BQ at her
home. Later that evening while going upstairs into my parents home my little cousin was
caught by me leaving out the back door. In her hand were my mother gold earrings. It
was a painful moment at first, being she use to live with me. After she was an abusive
environment, second it was very upsetting after grabbing her hands an envelope falls
from under her arm on the floor with my father DTE Bill and money on the inside. By
time she turns ten years old doing all this stealing and among other things when you
discipline her she goes tell her mom a lie that would result in a big argument, one time a
fight.
My little cousin through my eyes was a thief and a liar. She no longer was allowed in
my home nor was my child allowed to go with her nowhere. At this time in my life, for
some reason it was always needed people coming into my life emotionally needed. That
made me reaches out to women who lost their hair from Chemo, the senior in the
convalescent home that need dry shampoo and New Life Woman Treatment Center. It
made me take a look at me, finding myself thinking of my little cousin. No matter what
happen in my family at the end of the day, she is my family. You can choose your friend

but not your family sees family is family cause they have to be. Friends are friends cause
they choose to be. In spite of that it has taken year for us to heal and grow that is another
paper.
Today when thinking of social work practice it reminds me of an incident at Hurley
Medical Center in the year of 2013. When The U.S Equal Opportunity Commission says,
it has settled a race discrimination charge filed with the Commission against Hurley
Medical Center. This event took place allowing a black nurses were forbidden from
treating a white baby. (Ridley 2013) This baby is at the age only understanding he or she
is respond to is being held a feeling a child cannot describe. As a social worker "The
fundamental point of the policy is that racism must not be tolerated. The policy
specifically calls upon all social workers to continuously acknowledge, recognize and
confront all forms of racism, within all of the institutions that are relevant to social work.
(NASW, 2006). There so much work we, as social workers have to continue to strive for
achieving traditional problems in making a change. Problem as these affect life
opportunities of all diversity race giving us as a social worker to keep breaking barriers.
